There were many ancient kingdoms in the Horn Of Africa, even going back before the Axum/Aksum era. One of the most dominate from this period was called D'mt/Da'amat, located in Ethiopia and Eritrea beginning in 980 B.C. Other port-cities were also emerging in ancient Somalia.
The Horn of Africa was a major trading area for the nations of Kush & Kemet. It was known as the land of Punt as well as God's land. After the fall of Nile valley African kingdoms, this area would become the new superpower of ancient East Africa, beginning with the rise Axum.
The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is a Greco-Roman manuscript estimated to have been written between 40 & 50 AD. The text describes ancient trade routes of the Red Sea, including the maritime civilizations of East Africa, acknowledging king Zoskales ruler of the port of Adulis
