In honor of #ShutDownSTEM #Strike4BlackLives, I want to amplify two programs, housed @UMBC, that have TREMENDOUS track records for Black folx across the U.S. in #STEM:

#MeyerhoffScholars and MARC *U*STAR (URISE) programs. The former has existed for 30+ years.

A thread/
For those who don't know, the #MeyerhoffScholars Program was co-founded by @UMBC president, Dr. Hrabowski, and Robert Meyerhoff to get more Black men into STEM graduate programs.

Eventually, it broadened to include all races irrespective of gender identity.

MARC*U*STAR, funded by @NIH, has also been pivotal in ensuring the pipeline for biomedical and behavioral sciences is as broad as possible (incl. those with disabilities).

For me, both programs affirmed my identity and confidence as a BW in STEM and gave me community.

Another fun fact about #MeyerhoffScholars and MARC, both introduced me to the idea of getting a PhD. Before these programs, I had no idea people made a living asking questions.

If you're like me and you loveeeee data (analysis), check out the breakdown of STEM PhD producers below.

@UMBC is the second top producing school for Black/African Americans with STEM PhDs beating out @Harvard which sits at the 28th spot.

You love to see it.
