Thread: Timo Werner’s 50 million move to Chelsea
With Timo Werner joining Chelsea for 50 million I will be analysing how he fits in at Chelsea and give my thoughts and opinions on the player. Let’s start.
In this thread I will talk about:
-Player attributes (positive)
-Player attributes (improvement)
-How he fits into the team
-My Opinion
Player attributes (positive):
Let’s start with Werner’s speed. It’s quite obvious from watching him he has electric pace. His burst of acceleration is very scary. For any defender in fact. Here’s a video that outlines that ability.
Werner’s end product is extremely good. He scores at a rate of 0.73 P90 with his xG P90 sitting at 0.63. He is over performing by quite a lot but it shows his finishing is lethal. He is a very composed and intelligent shooter. He tends to place the ball in the corners with power.
His finishing is up there with the very best. Lewa has a conversion rate of 23.6% which is a world class as well as Aguero’s 20.3%. Werner currently stands at 19.5%. He is in very very good company. Here’s a video that shows all his G/A this season.
Werner is HEAVILY involved with play. He likes to drop deep to help with the build up play and progress the team and ball up the pitch. He adds another midfielder in the midfield. It creates another option meaning he works hard for his teammates.
Werner plays around 31.6 passes P90. In fact he also makes the most touches of the ball P90 out of any U24 striker in Europe’s top 5 leagues, incredible! He is a very unique striker in this regard. He has very good link up play as well. Especially when playing with a target man.
We cannot mention Werner without mentioning his counter attacking threat. His ability to carry the ball up the pitch with his 35.6 carries P90 shows he is a decent carrier and is lethal when there’s a lot of space in front of him. You can almost always back him to score.
In fact when it comes to ball carries only Correa beats him at this when comparing other U24 attackers. Werner’s positional play is also good but something that’s better is his antisapection. He perfectly waits for the ball. He has mastered it in fact.
The timing of his finishing is excellent and a very big part why he’s so lethal in front of goal. Lastly, Werner is a decent presser. He averages 14.1 pressures P90 but not as good as Tammy’s 17.7 P90.
Player attributes (improvement):
Let’s start with Werner poor big game performances. It seems like Werner does struggle to score goals against the big teams consistently. If he does, it’s due to an massive error from the opposition. It does show off his overall game off more.
Werner main weakness is his ability in the air. He’s super poor in this regard. He only wins 20.5% of his aeiral duels. Super poor. Werner is a player who will want the ball on the floor at all times which Lipzeig always aim to do. He’s not the usual Chelsea “striker”.
Werner is consistently offside that you may give Chelsea fans nightmares about Morata and Higuain. 1.6 P90 in fact. Werner doesn’t like playing his back to goal. It’s very rare you’ll see him in this postion. You just need to consistently feed him through balls.
Another thing with Werner is he replies on his pace too much to beat his defenders. He lacks any skill to get past them. This can be a problem against deep blocks. He can also be too dependent on defensive mistakes way too much as well a target man.
They both have given him many many goals. He is also lacks aggression and poor physicality. Upper body needs working on.
How he fits in the team:
Exbit 1: I think we established he isn’t a lone striker. The most popular option is to play him at LW. For me, it’s not ideal. Werner isn’t a good winger or a lone striker. He can’t beat his man well or without pace and it limits him.
Exbit 2:
This solution best suits his abilities. He plays in a two with someone that can hold the ball. Tammy isn’t anything special at it but can implement this to his game. This formation will bring the best out of Werner. Whatever has a 2 striker system would work.
Exbit 3:
This one is an unpopular one but Werner could play just off the striker like a second striker. This is just as good for him for me. It will help massive with build up play which we have struggled with a lot this season. He also possesses a massive goal threat. Seem good!
My Opinion:
The signing of Timo Werner is a weird one for me. He is a very good player of course but it’s weird due to how we have played and how Werner plays. We would have to change our whole formation and system to benefit him.
For someone who isn’t great on the wing or lone striker it’s weird we got him when we play a 433. We already have Pulisic and Odoi at LW and Tammy at striker. Although we definitely need a backup striker, wouldn’t it be more sensible to get one that can play as a lone striker.
To know whether this deal will be a success or not it all depends on how Werner is used by Lampard. He isn’t you traditional PL striker. He will take time to adjust that’s for sure. He needs to make massive improvements in the right areas to his game has well i.e his heading.
I’m not fully aboard this Werner train just yet. He isn’t a player that I would have thought would work in the PL. I don’t say that often just because of the league. It just doesn’t suit his style for me. I guess we will wait and see. Please be patient with him though!
