Knowledge of Self is the most important aspect on thriving in the USA. As a minority, this society will beat the originality & sense of self-worth out of you, if you do not choose to love & cherish yourself & your people's history.
18. Eminem - White America

In 2002, it truly was "Emerica". He was on top of the world, yet he still had the self-awareness to Check His Privilege, long before it was conventional wisdom to do so

Giving his fans a reality check & going at Republicans, he was speaking my mind.
17. Nas - Memory Lane

The Best HH song ever made as far as I'm concerned & one of the very best pieces of music and/or poetry in human history, Periodt.

Only reason It's not higher is because I didn't get into Illmatic as early on, so there's other's I'm more emotional about
16. Common - Be(Intro)

A top 5 intro track, all-time.

Being from St. Louis, MO, a mere 4 hours from Chicago, I've always connected with the vibe & vocals that Common offers. It just feels like home, & this track is the pinnacle of that feeling
15. Nas - I Can

I was 10 ys/o when this dropped, and it was like a national anthem for black youth

Nas was talking directly to me. Ironically, the success of this song is less about the specifics of what he said, but more the fact that he was paying direct attention to us, imo
14. Kanye West - The Good Life - ft T-Pain

My all-time "Feel good" song. The ultimate celebratory track. I play it every time I reach a new goal, & always will.
13. Jay-Z - Dead Presidents II

The track that defines Hov's classic debut, and also the one that epitomizes both his artistic identity & real life mission statement

This song is Hov, serving as inspiration to those who seek economic freedom & self-actualization
12. Talib Kweli - Hostile Gospel pt 1

"We living in these times of love and cholera
Synonymous with the apocalypse, look up the clouds is ominous
We got maybe ten years left say meteorologists, shit
We still waitin for the Congress to acknowledge this!"
11. T.I. - Dead & Gone ft Justin Timberlake

I played this song more than any other the year it it came out, & has never left my playlists since.

I use to get into fights every year growing up. Age 6 - 16, all I did was fight.

This song helped me decide to quit fighting
10. Jay-Z - What More Can I Say

It's no secret that Jay-Z is my GOAT, as he is too countless others and I think there's more Hov on this list than any other rapper: This song is the epitome of Why.
9. Nas & Damian Marley - Leaders

"This one's for all the Leaders" - Jr. Gong

8. The Roots - How I Got Over (Title Track)

"And I swear it isn't fair
In suspended animation, we ain't tryna go nowhere
Out here in these streets, we're so young and all alone
We ain't even old enough to realize we're on our own"
7. Nas - Nas Is Like

The ultimate use of simile, the best braggadocio, competitive rap song of the 90's, Hip Hop's most competitive era.

This was my childhood superhero anthem
6. Lupe - Mural

The track that represents everything I love most about Hip Hop lyricism, taken too it's pinnacle.
5. Talib Kweli - Beautiful Struggle

This track is, tragically, always timeless due to the nature of the society we live in, It stays in rotation

"Yo, I heard it's said the revolution won't be televised/
But in the land of milk and honey there's a date you gotta sell it by/"
4. Jay-Z - Moment of Clarity

The track that summarizes Hov's story, life views & catalogue..

My favorite Jay-Z song ever, where he shouts out my favorite mc, Kweli
3. Black Star - Respiration

The best track, from my favorite rap album ever..

The peak of the underground hip hop movement.

Not old school, or new school, but True School..
2. Eminem - Sing For The Moment

This track did it's job for a generation of rap fans.

It connected with waves of anxious, isolated youth who had nothing more than the heroes on their wall to look up too.

When I first heard this song I was crying at night, wishing I'd die.
1. Kanye - Never Let Me Down

Like many, I adored Aaliyah. This song broke the news that she'd died in a plane crash

It was also a timely reminder for the then 12 year old me that "racism was still alive", helped inspire my love for spoken word poetry, & inspires me to this day
