A Statue of William III was erected in College Green, Dublin in 1701. It was defaced with mud in 1710, damaged in 1714, in 1715 a watch house was built nearby and a sentinel posted to protect it. In 1765 it was raised up on a higher plinth to make it more difficult to damage.
It was partially beheaded by Watty Cox in 1798, covered in tar and grease in 1805, and a riot ensued in front of the monument between Orangemen trying to decorate it and Catholics on the 12 July 1822.
The monarch was severely damaged and blown off his horse with gunpowder in 1836, damaged again in 1843, stoned in 1882, and an attempt was made to blow it up with a land mine in 1928. It was eventually removed to the Mansion House only to be beheaded in 1930.
Brendan O'Neill's parents left Ireland in 1968.
