Thread of books I've read in 2020 :
I read this on my way from Kumasi to Accra. Dr Ben Carson tells a wonderful story of how he,a poor black boy raised by a single mother becomes a famous neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. Some of the accounts sound exaggerated, but still an inspiring book. 5/10
Funny how we read books that tell us what we already know. Gladwell differentiates what sets high end achievers(outliers) apart from other people. He emphasizes factors such as"who born you","your parents hold" and how efforts(10000 hour rule) play a massive role in our future.
This book is adapted from an eloquent Tedtalk she gave on her experiences of gender injustice, prejudice and stigma against modern day feminism in Nigeria and abroad. I listened to the talk and read the book. Her arguments were compelling and practical. A good read. 8/10
This memoir is a blend of humor, tragedy, history of racial segregation and genocide, police brutality and white privilege in SA. Reading this book was like listening to Trevor speak and I enjoyed every bit of it. He's a really good storyteller. I'd recommend this book. 9/10
To be frank,I was expecting just comedy because Aziz is a comedian but the book was insightful. I loved how he interviewed old people on their experiences with love and the surveys and research he conducted on how technology has affected modern love & romance
"the most beautiful part of your body
is where it's headed, & remember
loneliness is still time spent
with the world "

a 9/10❤️
Complications is about the experiences of a surgical resident on the ethos of medicine, fallibility of doctors, medical intervention and the sanctity of life. He d The medical cases and complications were interesting too
How to Write My Country’s Name is a collection of poems and short stories by a generation of excellent Ghanaian writers. It details the relationship between the writers' personal experiences and some political and maybe economic structures in Ghana and even beyond. a 10/10🙈
I loved his book because I hardly ever see crime novels set in Ghana.Tail Of The Blue Bird by Nii Ayikwei Parkes is an extraordinary fusion of forensic science and ordinary Ghanaian police work. Ayikwei Parkes blends pidgin and twi to tell a lovely entertaining and lovely story.
A neurosurgeon with the passion to understand life battles with stage IV metastatic lung cancer He writes about trying to make peace with death before dying. The best book I've read so far in 2020. A book that made me teary
“I said, I love you
when I meant something much
more specific, I should have said,
Please don't leave me,
I'm afraid to sleep alone.”

"What no one ever talks about
is how dangerous hope can be.
Call it forgiveness
with teeth"
a really hilarious and satirical book. the author breaks down the reality of being Nigerian in a very humorous way and i think a lot applies to Ghana as well.
If you like Greek mythology, this is for you. It's based on Homer's Illiad and features Achilles,Agamemnon,Thetis and Odysseus. Patroclus and Achilles had an affectionate and strong relationship people believed it was romantic. A very good book
Liked the idea but the poetry is so so not good. But i finished it because agenda must agend
Edwidge Danticat is a fine writer. This year i lost some relatives so i shared the same grief Edwidge felt when she lost her mother. She wrote about death and dying as described by some famous authors. The book is extremely morbid, but I still loved it
you can finish this in one sitting. it basically advises creatives to be genuine with themselves and draw inspiration from others with caution.
This is not just a history lesson. NEIL GAIMAN is a genius and I had to read this again. He retells the story and breathes life into the old myth stories of Asgard - the gods, the frost giants, elves, dwarves and mythical creatures. If you love mythology, this is for you.
i liked the "school of life" YouTube channel and decided to read the book. not a fan of these self help kind of books but i liked this. there were no fresh ideas or thoughts on life, just reminders. you won't agree with everything they say but keep an open mind
ugh
love?
healing?
anxiety?
go and read
the title is self explanatory😂😂
an insight into the personality of Josep Pep Guardiola, his methods and implementation of his philosophies. this book isn't an exaggeration or a falsified public perception of who Pep is. it gives accounts of interviews of players and sports personalities on Guardiola's ideals
do you remember the woman who turn the sailors into pigs when odysseus visited the aeaea islands? madeline miller tells the story of circe when she was exiled for her use of witchcraft in turning her lover into a god.
this books just reminds you as a woman to recognize your self worth and stop wondering if he's into you because he aired you etc. it encourages you to not settle for less and to recognize who really is into you
Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah's "Friday Black" is an anthology of stories about hate, violence, racism and tech. Set in a dystopian future, the theme is dark and quite fierce but i loved it. My favorite story was "The Finkelstein 5". The writing was excellent.
"not that bad" is an anthology of stories by different people on their experience on what it's like to live with the trauma of sexual abuse and unwanted sexual encounters as well as how rape culture is perpetuated in everyday life
I can't say much but you'll love this if you like to read poetry
inspired by the beatles' song "norwegian wood", the story is mostly about the minds of japanese teens, suicide, their sexual misadventures and mental illness. also loved how Murakami described the scenery in japan.
7 short stories of lonely men and their coping mechanisms in the face of rejection and death of their partners.
Cleopatra was a remarkably wonderful woman. Wow!
Neil Gaiman at it again
an entertaining story of a Nigerian polygamist patriarch and the arrival of his 4th wife,Bolanle. the storyline is satisfying and maybe mysterious as well. an interesting read that got me out of a reading slump.
Unbowed is the story of the first African woman and environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a story of strength, resilience and determination. Dr. Maathai was a staunch advocate for human rights. She founded the Green Belt movement in 1977. May her soul rest in peace
Well this is certainly not a book to enjoy. Set in the time of the second world war and the holocaust,Anne Frank records her thoughts and experiences. It is a diary so you can imagine how deep and honest she was about that time
This may be one of the best mystery and Agatha Christie books I've read. The plot was interesting from the beginning up to the time where the Mr. Poirot comes in to solve the case. Mind blowing!!!
eh? back and forth, repetitive. but i love that she rants and get heard sometimes. and the real issues about climate change still remain. they're speeches so i didn't expect to feel inspired or something. only read it because ad hoc, ad loc,and quid pro quo
A story of love and misfortune. The writer's way with words are breathtaking. The story is narrated by the "chi"(the guardian spirit) of our protagonist. He saves a woman about to commit suicide, and falls in love with him. She's from a rich family. Then the tragedy begins....
The whole mystery surrounding the murder was well crafted and the writing was just impeccable. Thought it took me longer than usual,i still enjoyed this book. Best crime fiction I've read and I've only read two so...🙈
