For people who have family members that believe the #police are not #racist towards #black people or that #trump hasn't instilled violence in the U.S. or has actually helped black people (but Obama hasn't), I have compiled #data that demonstrates why this is false. A thread: 1/
Since I have family members that don't trust the #media, I am trying to use raw data and analysis to demonstrate my points. In addition, I am going to generally focus on the black community, while I acknowledge that other communities of people are also discriminated against. 2/
https://www.pnas.org/content/116/34/16793 A 2019 @PNASNews article discusses the risk of being killed by police use of force. The article states that black men are ~2.5x more likely to be killed by police than white men. Black women are ~1.4x more likely to be killed than white women 4/
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3102652 A 2018 @SSRN article shows that hate crimes unusually increased during the 2016 election and maintained a high rate after Trump's election. Note, 2017 has ~1.4x hate crimes as 2014 with Obama. 5/
Diving deeper, statistics showed that counties with stronger support from Trump were specifically linked to an increase in hate crimes, creating a correlation between trump's rhetoric and an uptick in racism/discrimination. 6/
The previous article is a particularly good read because it uses multiple sources of data, including direct quotes from Trump, quotes from hate crime offenders who referenced Trump, and raw hate crime data. I would highly recommend reading it more in depth if you can. 7/
https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime/2015 , https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime/2017 , https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime/2018  FBI hate crime data reinforces this, with 5,850 hate crimes in 2015, 7,175 in 2017 & 7,120 in 2018. In all years, most hate crimes were racially motivated (anti-black bias) & committed by white people. 8/
http://www.naacp.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Fumes-Across-the-Fence-Line_NAACP_CATF.pdf The @NAACP discusses how black people are exposed to 38% more-polluted air than white people. In addition, more than 1 million black people live within a half mile of existing natural gas facilities & the number is growing every year. 10/
https://www2.ed.gov/about/overview/budget/budget20/summary/20summary.pdf If we look directly at Trump's 2020 proposed @usedgov budget, there were major cuts to (& removal of) programs for people w/ disabilities, adult education, family education loans, & many institutional development programs that benefit people of color. 13/
https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/budget-fy2020.pdf Similarly, Trump's overall 2020 budget plan called for large increases to @DHSgov, @DeptVetAffairs, & @SBAgov, but large cuts for @USDA, @CommerceGov, @usedgov, @ENERGY, @HHSGov, @HUDgov, @Interior, @USDOL, @StateDept, @USAID, @USDOT, @USACEHQ & @EPA 14/
To clarify, I support budget increases for certain agencies (like @SBAgov), but the other budget cuts could have serious impacts on the health & safety of this country. The 2021 proposed budget also had similar proposed cuts. 15/
Moving on, I will first compare Trump & Obama's deficit numbers for those who care about the economy. While Obama was dealt a large deficit from the 2008 crash, over his presidency, he decreased the deficit by 3x. Since trump has taken office, the deficit has roughly doubled. 17/
In addition, while the unemployment rate skyrocketed after the 2008 crash, @EconomicPolicy shows that Obama was able to significantly decrease unemployment numbers for everyone, which have continued to decline. 18/
https://www.kff.org/disparities-policy/issue-brief/changes-in-health-coverage-by-race-and-ethnicity-since-the-aca-2010-2018/ Analysis from @KFF also show that the uninsured rates for the noneldery has decreased significantly since 2013's ACA modifications during Obama's second term, & stagnated (& increased a bit for black people) since Trump took office. 19/
https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2015/cb15-209.html In addition, between 2007 and 2012, during Obama's first term, the number of minority- and women- owned firms (businesses) each increased by more than 2 million nationally. 20/
https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2016/10/14/progress-african-american-community-during-obama-administration The Obama administration made a summary of the progress they made for the black community, which includes some of the data seen above. Of course, Obama didn't fix everything, but he certainly has done more than Trump. 22/
While there is a lot of data in the above list (and I only pointed out a few items), I am happy to go in and verify/find sources for each of the statistics made if anyone is interested. 23/
I will leave it here for now, since I think this is a good list of concrete proposals, statistics, & data to demonstrate my point, but I will add more if I find anything particularly important. In addition, if you or a family member want any other data, let me know. 25/25
