A legendary figure within the Ravidassi moment, seen to be an imancipator of the downtrodden, Sant Sarwan Dass was one of few who gave a voice to the downtrodden Chamars in Punjab.
His tenure as gaddi nashin of the largest dera in Doaba (Jallandhar) saw emphasis on education for children, with many who studied under him and Sant Hari Dass becoming successful pathis (with vidhya from the sevapanthi taksaal in Sri Amritsar)
Sant Sarwan Dass ji's dream that Ravidassis would have their distinct identity free from oppression became reality when he located and started work on the janam asthan of Guru/Bhagat Ravidass ji. This was central to the adoption of the Ravidassi identity.
Along with the adoption of Har(i) as the Nishan for Ravidassias (from guru Ravidass jis Baani) there became a distinct identity for Ravidassis within Sikhi (especially Udasi, Nihung and Nirmalay panths due to shared commonality in Maryada)
They are, in all effect a member of the sant mat, as much as any other branch of sikhi- emphasis on Akhand Paats is especially noted here. (NB: Of those Ravidassis who still retain SGGSji as Opposed to the Amritbaani post 2010)
The identity that Ravidassis have forged is unique, nestled between Sikhi and its Sampardayes as well as being uniquely distinct- all due to the caste system.
