please, people. anti Black racism is not a disease, a pandemic, a cancer, a mental illness, a blindness, a tone deafness, or any other kind of disability. it is ANTI BLACK RACISM -- and ableism sucks regardless of who is doing it. 😑
it's hard but necessary to remove ableist language from our vocabularies. for the last several years i've tried to not use common words describing disability in any other sense, e.g. "tone deaf". it might be best to switch that to "amusia", the medical term, instead.
"amusia" is a bit of a mouthful though. and for many people it wouldn't be easy to correctly guess the meaning. :/
one of my relatives has congenital amusia. they are also a parent. i remember one day they mentioned it was really hard for them to not be able to sing to their babies in the way they wanted [when they were little]. since then i ask permission before singing to someone's baby.
I'd like to become less audist. who would you recommend following who is Deaf or hard of hearing?
Well, for one thing, massage therapy is medical care, but the same can't be said of haircuts. 😒 https://twitter.com/TorontoStar/status/1268305241465860096

i haven't really said this much at all before but yep, i am also on the autistic spectrum. if this is a problem for you, i didn't want you reading my tweets anyway, so don't let the door hit you on the way out. 😁
my autistic friends *rock*, btw.
it pisses me off to see "progressives" i otherwise respect using the ableist mixed capitals meme. seriously, you fuckwits, LOOK IT UP, you are embarrassing yourselves with your classism and ableism. 😑
if you're unaware of the ableism and classism of the mixed capitals spongebob meme, look for a thread by @/cricketcrocker, it's excellent
I invite everyone to permanently quit mocking adults (and youths and children) who wear diapers. Now.

What's in our undies is a private matter, i.e., none of anyone else's business.

Reserve your mockery for fascists and other pieces of shit. 💩 https://twitter.com/AdamHubrig/status/1272172163009839105
if ur gonna have hold music, why the fuck does it have to repeat on a timescale shorter than 2 minutes. or even 5-10 minutes. like srsly. it drives ur customers round the fucking bend. well, me, anyway. 😡🚫🎶
one ableist phrase to stop using: "grow a spine".

disabled people with spinal issues have reminded me that the condition of one's spine has absolutely nothing to do with whether one has a good moral compass. just say what you mean rather than comparing badness to disability.

seriously, please stop what you are doing and read this important piece. and make time to seriously reflect on what it teaches you. i have not felt more seen in any essay in over twenty years of not recovering from an injury i sustained at age 30. 😭 https://twitter.com/a_h_reaume/status/1273402361436794881

a piece of ableist language i see used a lot is "grow a backbone!"

as people living with various spinal conditions have reminded me, what is really meant is "grow some better [political] principles!"

so let's just say that instead, there's no need to stigmatize variant spines.
(i've long ago lost count of how many otherwise great tweets i didn't like or RT because of that particular ableist usage. three today, for example, each from a leftist account, each tweet with thousands of likes.)

some people i know (including several influential colleagues) think i openly reveal too much about my disability status. they are all nondisabled & don't understand how much i'm trying to normalize being physically &/ mentally unwell. i have tenure, why not use it for good ends?
