When fields approached the crowd, he slowed down, but was surrounded by hostiles and attacked.
Fields was not a member of any organization, KKK or otherwise. The closest association was a photo with a Vanguard America shield.
Prosecutors during the UTR trials cited jokes made in private channels to the effect of "I won't be Regi Denny'd" between participants as evidence that not only were protesters ready, willing, and able to start a riot, but the "murder" Fields committed was encouraged/expected.
