'Veer' Vinayak Damodar Savarkar ji: Thread.
Son of Damodar Savarkar and Radha Bai, Savakar had three siblings: Ganesh, Narayana and sister Maina.
His mother passed away at the age of 9 and father after 7 years of Mother's demise.
His elder brother Ganesh Savarkar took responsibility of the family.
In 1900 he formed Band of Friends (Mitra Mela) whose prime aim was to collect the youth and revive the lost culture under the British Rule.
In 1902, Savarkar was enrolled in Fergusson College, Pune. After few years he took part in Swadeshi Movement and was expelled from the college because the authorities never wanted him to indulge in outrageous activities.
Somehow he completed his B.A. degree and with help of activist Shaymji Krashna Varma, he went to England to study law from Gary Inn Law College.
There he founded 'Free India Society', and the aim of this society was of complete Indian Independence.
Savarkar even envisioned a guerilla war for Independence along the lines of 1857 war.
He deeply studied History of Revolt from English as well as Indian sources and after accumulating the information he wrote a book called, "The History of War of Indian Independence" in 1909, thereby shattering the myth of the world that '1857 was just a sepoy mutiny!'
The Book was banned throughout British Empire and Savarkar was even threatened for this. Despite this he sent one of the copies of the book to Madame Bhikaji Cama, who published it in Netherlands, France and Germany.
Book was widely circulated and recieved good popularity. Later it became 'Gita' for nationalist youths.
Abhinav Bharat Society's (which Savarkar established in 1904) member and his friend Madan Lal Dhingra assassinated Sir William Wyllie in a public meeting and after this Savarkar was arrested.
When he was taken to India to deport him in Cellular Jail, he even tried to escape and jumped from the Ship, but unfortunately his attempt was unsuccessful.
He then got 50 years of rigorous life Imprisonment in Cellular Jail. The conditions there were so inhumane, that it was difficult for people to survive there. Even this never weakened his morale and he used to write desh bhakti poems on wall with his nails.
He wrote several mercy petitions to the Britishers so that he could be released, as he knew nothing could be done from inside the jail.
Finally on 6th Jan, 1924, Savarkar was released that too under stringent restrictions.
He even helped to design the first National Flag, which Madam Cama unfurled at World Socialist Conference at Germany.
In 1937, Savarkar was elected as President of Hindu Mahasabha. He joined the organisation in response to the Muslim League.
Being an Atheist himself, he wrote the book, 'Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?' where he called India a 'Punyabhoomi.'
Savarkar even wanted Indians to participate in the WWII, so that we can learn the, 'art of war.'
He had ideological differences with Gandhiji, but still Gandhiji had a deep respect for him.
After Gandhi ji's assasination he was held under preventive detention, but was later released as there were no evidences against him.
On 26th Feb, 1966 this idol of Courage passed away.

A nationalist like him will forever be in our hearts!

Jai Hind.
