Pubs I Miss
#1 Wintersgills, Glasgow

A bastion of old man realness on the heavily gentrified Great Western Rd. A pint of Tennent's amongst the regulars when there's a game on the telly is a truly heaven. Watch out for bemused chemistry students on a subcrawl, a treat.
Pubs I Miss
#2 The State, Glasgow

Purveyors of the finest rocket fuel ale, The State bar is a Glasgow icon. It's location, just off Sauchiehall St, gives it a real metropolitan buzz while the beautiful island bar recalls grand days of yore. Dead comedians haunt the basement.
Pubs I Miss
#3 The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow

The place for a quiet pint midweek after work, for the weekend birthday meet-up, for the drinks before going out, for the cool as fuck gig upstairs, for the alternative theatre production, for the spoken word show (of course!).
Pubs I Miss
#4 The Pot Still, Glasgow

A city centre mixer for the old team, the students and tourists on the look out for something authentic. Best whisky collection in the world (probably), but also an incredible range of imported German bottles and Scottish casks. Magical.
Pubs I Miss
#5 Pony Cafe, Barcelona

Central, but just off the beaten track - Pony Cafe is a neighbourhood bar with a hip makeover. Unbearably cool locals mix with international residents in an atmosphere that somehow feels totally chill and entirely electric. A gem in Born.
Pubs I Miss
#6 Allison Arms, Glasgow

More than even the Glad Cafe, the Ally Arms is the posterboy for the Southside renaissance. A melting pot of auld da culture, craft beer swilling artists and characterful dugs - it’s also a progressive, LGBT friendly haven. Open the fridge.
Pubs I Miss
#7 The Horseshoe Bar, Glasgow

An iconic Glasgow watering hole. Packed full at the weekend, getting a stool at the back and watching the crowds is a treat in itself. Cold Tennent’s the only option. Legendary karaoke sessions upstairs. Woman’s bathroom added recently.
Pubs I Miss
#8 Redmond's, Glasgow

The cool neighbourhood bar Dennistoun had always been crying out for. A genuinely friendly, local vibe - the staff will always take time to have a chat and ask about your day. Extra points for the outstanding vinyl collection on rotation.
Pubs I Miss
#9 The Settle Inn, Stirling

A pub of great character and charm - the Settle is a community hub, an artistic haven and reliable local. Student-friendly without pandering. It looks like it could be on a Visit Scotland advert (in a good way).
Pubs I Miss
#10 Inn Deep, Glasgow

A craft beer colossus on the banks of the Kelvin, Inn Deep is a multitalented diamond. A summer destination, an underground hideaway and home of the legendary Inn Deep Poetry nights. Get a pint and pet a dug.
Pubs I Miss
#11 The Brass Monkey, Edinburgh

The sort of crusty curio that only really exists in Edinburgh. A bar that feels perpetually sticky gives way to a weird student flat orgy of questionable couch/beds and even more questionable movie posters in the backroom.
Pubs I Miss
#12 The Variety Bar, Glasgow

A Sauchiehall St institution, the Variety has long existed as a welcome anomaly on the city's main drag. Hip but welcoming, cool but unpretentious - it has long been the go-to for a 'proper' drink before a big night on the town.
Pubs I Miss
#13 The Old Toll Bar, Glasgow

Is there a more beautiful bar than this one? Period mahogany detail and candle lit grandeur, it instantly conjures up a vibe of extravagance. Its character however, is that of a welcoming inn slinging pints to locals and lost cowboys.
Pubs I Miss
#14 The Clachan, Strachur

The Scottish village pub par excellence. What it lacks in craft beer or fancy cocktails it more than makes up for with welcoming locals and an uninterrupted stream of patter. Cheese and crackers on a Friday night. Log fire daily.
Pubs I Miss
#15 Drygate, Glasgow

To be on the terrace of this temple of craft beer on a summer's day is to know heaven. One of the finest beer selections in the country, set over two floors, with amazing food and an eclectic list of events. A mecca for alternative pint lovers
Pubs I Miss
#15 Bloc, Glasgow

It's hard to think of a single pub that wears as many hats as Bloc, particularly so successfully. A pub, a club, an alternative music venue, a cheap lunch place, an experimental restaurant, a late night pizza joint. Bloc is a bar for all seasons.
Pubs I Miss
#17 Against The Grain, Dublin

I'm sure residents of the fair city could suggest a hundred establishments (and I'd gladly visit them all) but I never miss a trip to this fantastic craft beer cave when I'm in town. The tap range alone is enough to fulfil any palate.
Seeing as it's gonna be a while until we get back in one of these fine establishments with a cold pint in our mitts, it feels only right to bring this back...
Pubs I Miss
#18 Tennent's, Glasgow

Sitting at a prime location on Byres Road, Tennent's is a no nonsense boozer in the midst of studentland. Pub grub, a barrage of ales on tap, multiple screens showing all the games and Neil Lennon playing the puggy. What more do you want?
Pubs I Miss
#19 Nice n Sleazy, Glasgow

‘Sleazy’s’ is for many THE alternative Glasgow pub. Hip before hipster, effortlessly chaotic - it remains an institution of underground culture and casual debauchery. The 3am license and legendary White Russians keep the crowds coming back.
Pubs I Miss
#20 The Doublet, Glasgow

A west end institution, The Doublet is an idiosyncratic gem. The exterior font and interior timber make you feel like you're drinking aboard a jaunty pirate ship. Upstairs the function suite feels beamed in from another era altogether.
Pubs I Miss
#21 The Blue Blazer, Edinburgh

On the well worn path between Lothian Road and the Grassmarket sits this proper gem of a pub. Cosy, traditional and with a rotating complement of cask ales - come August it's a welcome respite from the garish excesses of the fringe.
Pubs I Miss
#22 Oran Mor, Glasgow

Beyond the lazy tropes of west end luvvies lies a bar of real substance. A multilayered beast, its nooks and crannies hosting candlelit conversations deep into the night. Upstairs the wondrous Alasdair Gray mural is a thing of true beauty.
Pubs I Miss
#23 The Bull Inn, Paisley

This historic gem in the heart of Paisley is a real step back in time. A beautiful dark bar gives way to a series of self contained snugs in the back. What a treat to take up residence with a group of pals in your own private Victorian den.
Pubs I Miss
#24 Barcade, Brooklyn

I don't know if this hip Williamsburg haunt is really the world's original arcade bar but I can tell you that it reappears regularly in my dreams. A warehouse of hoppy US crafts and classic arcade machines from the golden age of games. Heaven.
Pubs I Miss
#25 Max's, Glasgow

An often overlooked masterpiece, Max's has seen many transformations over the years. Formerly Twisted Wheel and RGs, it has retained its art deco charm throughout. Downstairs the sweaty La Cheetah club keeps the throngs dancing late into the night.
Pubs I Miss
#26 Sweeney's on the Park, Glasgow

Sweeney's is a pub of two halves. One side is a traditional bar famous for its perfect Guinness. The other is a function suite that transforms into a riotous venue over the weekend. Local covers bands provide the soundtrack.
Pubs I Miss
#27 Cloisters Bar, Edinburgh

A charming real ale paradise situated in an old church. The atmosphere is relaxed and chatty, a place to worship the gods of good conversation. The chalkboard beer menu holds all manner of earthly delights.
Pubs I Miss
#28 Blackfriars Bar, Glasgow

Blackfriars lies in the heart of the Merchant City, providing a cosier alternative to the chain pubs and neon lit cocktail joints surrounding it. An extensive craft and ale list, live music and a multipurpose arts venue in the basement.
