How I fear this will go:

!Lose weight or die!
!!Eat less. Move more!!
*obesity rates don’t change*
Don’t blame us, blame lazy, fat uggos.

Hope I’m wrong.

This is not a simple motivation problem. Exclusion and humiliation don’t provoke positive persistent change. https://twitter.com/thetimes/status/1261159487106437121

I can’t have it both ways. I can’t claim govt ability to influence in other politicised ways, then deny their ability to effect change in views about eating and exercise.

They’re good at demonising portions of the population to sway marginal support for controversial change

Folk feel vehemently that it just needs more grit and determination, despite all evidence to the contrary. The huge praise I’ve received for my 100lb weight loss, despite the surgical head start and 30 year tail of media fat-shaming, anecdotally bears that out
There’s lots all of us can do, and I am guaranteed to be seen as encouraging a ‘victim culture’ by govt fans. But do consider that’s just more grist to the blame mill https://twitter.com/MarkOneinFour/status/1287042032217853952?s=20
Another public health expert on #obesity research from 2007 - we are not just lazier.

The govt won’t invest in systemic change to support best efforts of those impacted because it is expensive and impacts valued revenue streams https://twitter.com/harryrutter/status/1287380408951287808?s=21 https://twitter.com/harryrutter/status/1287380408951287808
From later in that excellent thread on #obesity and public policy - one for the “we should rely on the market” or “we should rely on common sense” crews.

Neither thing produces a balanced public good when left without rational boundaries. https://twitter.com/harryrutter/status/1287384978519658496?s=21 https://twitter.com/harryrutter/status/1287384978519658496
