1/ What's the difference between neoliberalism and social democracy?

Re-sharing this great thread from @CascadianSolo, which had been lost to the sands of Twitter...
2/ "I. Am. Not. A. Social. Democrat.

I'm a neoliberal.

Left-neoliberalism on this site is often conflated with social democracy. It really, really shouldn't be.

Key differences between left-neoliberals and social democrats, a thread:"
3/ "Because some of you don't seem to know the difference.

Minimum wage:

Social Democrats generally want high minimum wages, particularly nationally. Left-neoliberals are more cautious, preferring minimum wages set based on cost of living."
4/ "Housing policy:

While both left-neoliberals & social democrats want increased housing construction to improve supply, neoliberals believe that increased construction through deregulation will be enough, or possibly with tax credits

Social democrats want some public housing"
5/ "Unionization:

Generally, neoliberals do not like public sector unions at all, believing they are a special interest group that makes government less efficient and creates pension obligations. Both generally favor private unions."
6/ "Education policy: Neoliberals are much more likely to be in favor of charter schools, believing that allowing choice in schools improves outcomes. Social democrats worry about the impact on teachers unions and traditional public schools."
7/ "Social benefits:

Neoliberals are in favor of means testing of public programs to reduce costs. Social democrats generally want more universal of programs.

However, both want to fight benefits cliffs and reduce poverty. Also, both like child benefits."
8/ "Corporate taxation:

Neoliberals want low corporate taxes, believing that consumers pay said taxes and that they're an undue burden on GDP. Social democrats want higher corporate taxes."
9/ "Financialization and corporate policy:

Neoliberals generally are with financialization of the economy, even if they support reforms to reduce the destructive power of venture capital and oppose mergers.

Social democrats are more open to speculation taxes, co-determination."
10/ "Trade

Neoliberals want expanded markets to improve human prosperity. While they generally want adjustment assistance in the agreements, there's less of an emphasis on setting environmental & labor standards

Social democrats generally want tougher rules in trade agreements"
11/ "Occupational Licensing:

A significant issue for left-neoliberals, it's not really on the radar of most social democrats."
