Maybe this is just the online circles I find myself in these days, but I feel like a phenomenon I'm seeing a lot lately is western queer folx turning towards east asian media looking for an alternative expression of masculinity
And I get it! I find myself looking towards the more apparently effeminate-seeming beauty standards in kpop, cdrama, anime, etc. as well. And I'm happy for anyone who is soothed by that, and anyone who finds themselves & their queerness there
But as an asian queer person, I can't help but be VASTLY uncomfortable by the huge influx in white people suddenly in these spaces, who are getting publicity for it, who evangelize these media as if they are the first to find them
It's more complicated than "boys can wear makeup & jewellery too!" I know that can be freeing, esp in a culture where transformative masculinity can still feel fraught. But pls think for a sec before you present e asian men as being inherently queered by their presentation—
—And maybe if you're a white person who is finding yourself in these spaces, be aware that this media isn't really for you, you're not the first to love it, either. And also maybe let us speak for ourselves when talking about how one can find queerness here.
