December 1970, following protests after massacre of 120 Civilians at Besikdera & 625 in village of Ona by Ethiopian army, bright young #Eritrea|ns from the top Universities in US hold a meeting in Harlem to launch EFLNA (aka ENASA).

They immediately make contacts throughout NA, Europe & start supporting fighters in the field.

After meetings with highly impressed delegation of Woldeab W, Osman Sabbe & Taha Nur (who came to argue #Eritrea's case at UN), they're encouraged to stay autonomous & push forward.

USSR joined Derg & started its assault in #Eritrea. Isaias's refusal to condemn & instead hold secret talks in Berlin incited outrage.

Members that had been kept in dark for yrs demanded answers.

At a volatile 9th Congress, EFLNA tore itself apart. Defamation flew everywhere.
Crisis shook the #Eritrea|n community. Many of the brightest minds walked away distraught & horrified. Disillusionment & even suicide followed.

But to Isaias, this was a lesson & an opportunity. No longer will anything that can't be controlled, be tolerated. Even in Diaspora.

This would create a significantly damaged Political Culture ripe for abuse. Reaching a breaking point after the war in 2000.
