Writing police procedurals? Approaching a crime scene – four basic steps: #Policeprocedure #CrimeWriting #WritingCommunity
Considering most procedurals are written by authors with no experience of being on the front line, it’s important to do your research.
Tip 1: Arrival on Scene – Focus not just on the dead body, or the shattered door - the scene should be looked at as a whole. The initial approach or evaluation is to take in everything you see. The little thing is the key.
Tip 2: Progressing the investigation: Talk to people, listen – to be a good investigator be a good listener.
Tip 3: Chase leads, narrow them down, eliminate –Motive, Opportunity, and Means – eliminate those who could not have committed the crime leads you to those who did.
Tip 4: The File –– presenting the case for prosecution – paperwork, paperwork, paperwork – and who wants to read about that 😉
