Hi, my name is Divya and for this year’s @pintofscienceAU, I am going to share some of my work on myopia or shortsightedness. I am an Optometrist curious about myopia in children🧐👀👁️ #ThisIsMyScience #Scicomm

Myopia is the inability to see far off distances clearly, & causes the eyeball to stretch & elongate. @bhvi @UNSWoptomvsci we investigate the posterior segment (back surface) of the eye (imaging) and correlate findings with the eyes’ prescription & length to predict myopia

The early trials show that, by utilising some of the variables extracted from the images, such as retinal vessel trajectory, the distance between fovea (bright spot or yellow spot) and optic disc (blind spot), the thickness of layers the eye surrounding the fovea, etc,

we may be able to predict a child's increase in myopic prescription. If these results are confirmed in the final stage of the research, and implemented next time you visit an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist ...

they may be able to predict your child’s risk of becoming a myope or chances of increase in the current myopic prescription by just looking at the eye scans.
5/5.
