When Starting/Started a Building Project:
I’ve dealt with almost every kind of problem that can come up during a building project. There are a few that come up over and over, delaying projects, frustrating clients/Contractors and costing them additional money.

It’s always easy to throw the blame to the Contractors/Engineer especially in a country like Nigeria where accountability is a rare virtue.
These problems tend to arise from a few basic misconception during construction so I would discuss them briefly.

This Outlines would come handy especially if you a novice in building construction.
However, I would love to borrow a some principles from the “Zen of Python”.
Sure they are applicable here trust me.
I will call it “Zen of Construction”

Having this mind, lets go to the various outlines.

1. Have Building/Project Drawing:
Starting your project starts with obtaining all necessary drawing needed for the project. Most clients do not see the need for Architectural and Structural drawing.

... Which could lead to breaking of already existing/erected walls to affix what was forgotten. Note that when you start breaking, you already introducing the tendency of cracks on you walls. At least for the sake of order which is the first rule in heaven, get a drawing.
You would always need this for your government approvals etc. so why not get them ready now.

2. ALWAYS Involve an Engineer:
I am aware that many have lost faith in the quality and integrity of Engineers/Contractors these days. But this shouldn’t be a reason why you won't involve an Engineer in your project

Quacks are not cheaper and safer options either.
Determining concrete mix ratios and areas of application are very key in construction. This is one of the very thing a quack cannot decide for you in your project.
Its cost effective and safer hiring a dedicated professional.

Note, the Keyword is “Dedicated “
There is a pool of qualified and dedicated professional who are willing to take your job at a cheaper rate. There are many method of negotiations you can employ to keep their (Professional) fee low. I will discuss that later

3. Listen to Your Engineer:
Of what need is hiring Alex Ferguson if you wouldn't listen to his ideas?
It’s one thing to hire an Engineer it’s another to listen to him. You have trust your engineer especially if he comes well recommended.

Having a Second opinion from a friend/relative/colleague who has completed a similar project is very welcome. But as wise Client you should also listen to your engineer.
You are pay for his ideas so you could as well listen and consider them. I’m sure by the time you weigh

both options you would see reasons lying somewhere between those suggestions.
Most problems on site between Client and Engineers/Contractors are as a result of conter-suggestion from parties who are not members of the project team. When engineers come highly recommended,

early enough.
Visiting your site also keeps the engineer on his toes. If you are concerned he might be untrustworthy, visiting makes him want to reconsider his actions many times. He doesn’t know when next you might be visiting.
