Good morning all & by this time 75 years ago, Field Marshal Montgomery had taken the surrender of the German higher command in Northern Germany, Denmark, and Holland at Lüneberg Heath & much of WWII in the West had ended. #VEDay75
By the end of WW2, Monty was basically DIYing his uniform each day - which you can do when you are winning WW2. He met Churchill at his HQ dressed for a lazy weekend...with an umbrella. Churchill himself ready to be an extra in “The Cruel Sea”
Monty and General Miles Dempsey etal in Berlin wear the British battledress while the Soviet commanders look like wannabe Prussians even down to the red trouser stripe for the Soviet General Staff - the modern Russian army still has the red stripe for its General Staff. Caveat
Churchill said of Montgomery something along the lines of “Monty in war was unbeatable - Monty in victory was unbearable”. But as long as Monty was winning, Churchill was supporting him
Even when the *KING* visited Monty in the field, he made no real effort with his rig => Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery explains Allied strategy to King George VI in his command caravan in Holland, October 1944
Monty and General Sir Miles Dempsey with the HQ staff after (iirc) the Battle of the Bulge - Dempsey is wearing a Royal Navy duffel coat and Monty is wearing whatever was clean that morning.
Film of Monty formally taking the German surrender - he first gives a good speech on the Nazi surrender & notes the British Empire stood alone until the Americans came in (....when they were bombed)...he dresses for comfort while speaking.
Good morning all & on this day in 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies at Reims, France. Jodl signed for the Nazis. General Eisenhower sent his chief of staff, General Bedell Smith, to sign for the US as Ike did not want to deal with the Nazis himself-but Ike got the pens
Good morning all & on this day in 1945, the remaining Nazi high command surrendered to the Soviets and the Allies at Karlshorst in Berlin. With Hitler dead, and his successor Admiral Donitz in Flensburg, Field Marshal Keitel signed for what remained of the Nazi state.
By War's end, Monty was trolling with a hipster waistcoat, beret, golden retriever pup, while Churchill decided that he wanted to be an Air Commodore for the day
Monty actually took time out from the War to sign a note here for some Chinese (ROC) officers to take to Chiang Kai-shek
March 1945: Monty well advanced in his "dressing for comfort" phase while Churchill has decided he wants to play soldier today. One feels for the dour Lord Alanbrooke at left.
By the War's final battles, Monty was basically dressing to see what he could get away with while Churchill wanted to play the officer of the watch on RMS Titanic. Again, one can only feel sorry for Alanbrooke, staring grimly at the camera.
By the time of the Allied occupation of Germany, Monty was unsure whether he was a bomber pilot or whether he was a retired Magistrate angry his local vicar was not following the lectionary
On any view, respect that Field Marshal Montgomery's appallingly bashed beret is the only uniform-issue item that Monty is still bothering to wear in the field by 1945.
Absolutely no idea what Monty is doing here - suspect that not just a knighthood but making Field Marshal means you can just DIY your dress of the day/uniform for comfortable trousers, a camo scarf adrift, and a beret that was last bashed in 1942
