Our book with Ozlem Altan Olcay `The American Passport in Turkey: National Citizenship in the Age of Transnationalism’ is out! This book is the result of our work together for eight years and we are proud to see it published. #upennpress
What’s it about? It's about the meanings and values that people attribute to U.S. citizenship from afar, specifically those who possess or seek to obtain U.S. citizenship. You will find in it many stories on how people experience their citizenship status.

What kind of book is this? The book is based interviews with more than a hundred individuals. Through their diverse narratives, we shed light on how U.S. citizenship is imagined, experienced, and practiced in Turkey.

Why did we write it?The image of the US as an ally in Turkey is declining and the power of the West is under scrutiny.Against this background, we wanted to understand the persistent allure of American citizenship and transnational meanings attributed to the US citizenship.
What is its contribution? We show that transnational meanings people attribute to American citizenship signal the emergence of an “American third world” whose borders don’t map onto recognizable political territories. We offer a rethinking of American power +national citizenship.
Who is it for? Specialists on Turkish-American relations, citizenship and migration studies will get a lot out of it, but stories of American citizens outside the US should interest everyone curious about how individuals try to change their life trajectories.
