One of my fave things when I travel in Japan is to find small roasteries and try out their coffee beans and bring some home w/me. As I assume a lot of these places can't serve customers in-store, this is likely their only source of income. Let's help them survive!

A THREAD 1/
Coffee History of Kobe / 神戸喫茶物語 (HYOGO)
Sources a lot of their beans directly from farms and offers a variety of roasts, including charcoal roast. Free shipping on orders over 5000yen. Monthly specials.

Mikado Coffee (NAGANO)
Carries Rainforest Alliance grown beans. Most of their stock focuses on blends, so check the taste profiles.
Free shipping over 7500yen, 5% cash back for credit card purchases.

Hiro Coffee (OSAKA)
Also carries Rainforest Alliance coffee. Nice selection of both blends and single origin. I really like their Costa Rica Aquiares single origin roast.

Kanazawaya Coffee (ISHIKAWA)
I loved this place-- their industrial roaster is in a huge glass room so you can watch them!
They basically just sell blends, not single origin. I liked the "Kanazawa Monogatari" the best.

"Good Coffee" website (Various)
One online shop I have been meaning to try; it connects coffee lovers with a variety of small shops in one website.

"Kichijoji Tsuru's" (TOKYO)
Local roastery with a very very 1990s website. Essentially they ask that you choose your beans from the list and then do orders by phone/fax. But these are worth it; roasted by hand with love in small batches!

"Honey Beans" (TOKYO)
Recc'ed by @XAlien88. Looks like they have a great selection of African coffees, including Ethiopian (the best!) and Yemeni.

"Akane Coffee" (TOKYO)
Recc'd by @arsonlupin, a shop with lots of options!
It seems they are doing free domestic shipping right now, too. The menu lets you choose by region/country, roast, type of coffee bean, and blend. Really comprehensive!

"Myconos Coffee" (TOKYO)

Another nice recc from @arsonlupin. Brick-and-mortar store is located Meguro. They have a selection of coffee for online purchase, with free shipping for orders over 4000 yen. https://www.mgcr.tokyo/
An interlude (for a book recc, of course, what else!) for those of you who are interested in the whys, hows, wheres, and history of coffee in Japan! https://twitter.com/FilmEssaying/status/1253643568154959872
"Tokuyama Coffee Boy" (YAMAGUCHI)

Kindly recc'd by @FilmEssaying. American roasters were inspired by Japanese ones, and Coffee Boy was in turn inspired by Stumptown. Enjoy the intercontinental coffee dialogue by picking up some of their beans.

"Muto Coffee Roastery" (TOKYO)

Another recc by @aneles. They offer a variety of blends, plus single-origin caffeinated from Guatemala and Indonesia and decaf from Peru.

Recc'd by @KNZ48 who says they're located on the top of a mountain (!!) and the cafe has a great view.
(Post-corona goals: drink a cup in this cafe! Corona goals: get a bag of their beans!)

"Wife&Husband" (KYOTO)

Cafe "Wife&Husband" and sister shop "Roastery Daughter/ Gallery Son" offer picnics and a very retro vibe with hand-roasted coffee, art, & antique furniture.
