OTD 2014 Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter died

@Steve_Crossman and I reinvestigated the triple murder he was twice convicted and twice released for.

Here’s a thread with some of the remarkable people we met.

Oh, and if you’ve not, listen to The Hurricane Tapes podcast on @BBCSounds
John Artis. He spent more than 14 years in jail, twice convicted alongside Carter.

This is him the first time we met, roaring with laughter as he showed us old photos

When the waitress found out who he was, she insisted on a photo

This was also my first Red Lobster experience
The scene of that 1966 triple killing. Known then as the Lafayette Bar & Grill. It’s not in the best part of Paterson, NJ. Although everyone was friendly, we didn’t stay long

The window above the entrance is that of star witness Patty Valentine, as Bob Dylan notes in his song
We stayed in Paterson long enough to visit...

The Nite Spot, where Carter and Artis said they were that night

The Waltz Inn, scene of another murder that same night

And the place where Carter and Artis were pulled over by police a short time after the shootings
Fred W. Hogan, the catalyst behind the overturning of the first conviction.

He’s showing us Carter’s actual glass eye, warn as a pendant or as in this case around his neck! Fred’s a great guy.

Also on display the ‘birthday card’ that started Hogan on his mission
Detective Robert Mohl was one of the main detective who worked on the case.

We met in an Italian restaurant and he asked me to swap seats as he “never sat with his back to the door”

Few interviews have shocked me more than this one
Tom’s grandfather Fred was one of the victims that night.

He never found out his grandfather had been murdered until the retrial 9 year after the event
Ron Lipton was the man who bought Muhammad Ali on board to fight for Carter, Ali even pay his bail.

Lipton was a hell of a character! We met him as he taught a boxing class at a local school. He also@made some very serious allegations.

A fantastically surreal day
“The Canadians”

Lesra Martin, the boy who literally learnt to read using Carter’s amazing “16th Round” prison autobiography

Gus Sinclair, who was in my top 5 interview of the series.

And Terry Swindon who I think bears an uncanny likeness to snooker legend Hurricane Higgins
The Defence Lawyers. Leon Friedman and Lou Steel

As passionate today as they were back then. Great view of the Chrysler building too
Theodora Carter, Rubin’s daughter.

A fantastic woman whose story and truths are compelling. Was a real privilege to meet her
The Judge who finally freed them. Judge H Lee Sarokin. In his 90’s he and his wife were very welcoming. We went for lunch

Glad we brought her some flowers
Eldridge Hawkins... meeting this man changed the course of our investigation in quite a major way!

We were both a bit bigger than him.
Ed Rawls... never got to meet him as he died a few years back. What secrets he went to his grave is anyone’s guess. But I suspect they were murderous ones 🤷‍♂️
John Artis, Jonny Carter and another seafood restaurant...

The stories they told... The lives they’ve lived.
So just a few photos still on my phone that I’m not prepared to delete of some of the people we met.

We had an amazing 18 months and I still can’t believe the end result

If you’ve already listened, hope it’s good to put faces to names and if you haven’t, well it’s not too late!
