Dimitri Kharine

He was a colourful character (not just his goalkeeping attire). Back in the early 90s and long before there was always a myth about goalkeepers having to be really tall, Dimitri was 6ft maybe slightly more.

He had the most incredible spring of any goalkeeper I’ve seen and he was a very good shot stopper. Yes he had an error in him like all goalkeepers but he was instrumental In Chelsea’s run to the Fa Cup Final in 1994.

Many Chelsea fans will remember Dimitri’s penalty save from Andy Gray in that memorable 4-3 over Spurs at Stamford Bridge. Despite losing the 1994 Cup final 4-0, Kharine impressively only conceded 3 goals in the preceding 7 games on route to the final.

Chelsea memorably beat Victoria Zizkov 4-2 in the home leg of the first round of the Cup Winners Cup, however it was the return leg where Dimitri’s vital penalty save ensured the nervy moments for  Chelsea were kept to a minimum.

Away from the pitch Dimitri is a gentleman, always watching youth team training and helping out with the young goalkeepers.

Dimitri who wore some colourful goalkeeping jerseys, but also gave us Chelsea fans some great memories, he was there right at the start, when this great club started to wake up again.
