Until then, Padmakar Shivalkar had only heard about the Brabourne Stadium, but never knew what CCI stood for.
Madhav Mantri (Sunil Gavaskar's uncle), had recommended their names for CCI's playing membership for 2 years.

About an year earlier, Padmakar Shivalkar was playing Purushottam final match for Ruia Sports against Dadar Cricketers.
Madhav Mantri and Vijay Manjrekar were at crease as Ruia captain Vinubhai Mistry asked Paddy to bowl.

Paddy bowled only few overs to the two legends, but it was enough to impress them.
Manjrekar asked Paddy to take up membership of Shivaji Park Gymkhana.
"If Manjrekar had not chosen you for Gymkhana, I would have taken you to my Club, Dadar Union" quipped Mantri

When Paddy first stepped into Shivaji Park Gymkhana, he was greeted by Vishu Lele (capt) and introduced to other stalwarts like Madhu Patil, Chandu Patankar, Manohar Hardikar, Ramakant Desai, Balu Gupte, Ajit Wadekar et al.
The warmth of that gathering had overwhelmed Shivalkar.

Now, as he entered the hallowed dressing room of CCI for the first time, he was greeted with a

by none other than Indian captain G S Ramchand.

Shivalkar was taken around for a tour of CCI by Ranjit Asher. He was left awestruck by its heritage, esp the pictures of teams from Eng, Aus, WI, NZ, Pak adorning dressing room walls

Paddy told Mankad,
विनूभाय मला तुमच्याकडे खूप शिकायचंय
(I want to learn a lot from you)
To which Mankad replied,
आता आणि काय शिकायचंय? तुमची बॉलिंग करा. तुमी विनूभाय नाय होयल. तुमचा हाय ते इंप्रूव करा
(What is to be learnt? Don't aspire to be Mankad. Be yourself & improve)

To which Mankad replied,

Back when Shivalkar had not held a leather ball in his hand even once, Vinoo Mankad had selected him in the team for Bradbury Mills cricket team. Shivalkar had regaled us with this funny story during @Cric_Writer 's #WizardsOfSpin publication.

CCI won Kanga League in '61 after 5 years.
When Shivalkar was selected in the CCI team for the Australian tour in early '62, he had no money even to buy even his kit.
It was Vinoo Mankad to rescue again, asking Shatrushalya Sinh, Prince of Jamnagar, to fund Shivalkar's travel.

That Australian tour of CCI was a runaway success for Shivalkar.
CCI team won 16 out of 22 matches. Shivalkar took 107 wickets.
No wonder he was selected for the CCI vs Int'l XI match at Brabourne Stadium, the home of CCI, immediately after this tour.

Padmakar Shivalkar got a call for Bombay Ranji team the following year (as a reserve player) for the final against Rajasthan.
That Rajasthan team had two stalwarts, whom Shivalkar was always indebted to - Vinoo Mankad and Vijay Manjrekar.
