Chip manufacturing - full spectrum #India:

1/Type of setups:
-full spectrum
-design & fabrication
-design only
-foundries that manufacture chips designed by others
2/Skills needed:
-high end engineering
-physics
-material science
-top end manufacturing
3/Leaders in this space being:
-Taiwan
-Korea
-China
-Japan
-US
-few others
4/India has experience in some electronics manufacturing
5/Import of electronics is second only to Oil
6/We are feeding our arch competitors in importing chips
7/Full spectrum chip manufacturing setup needs ~10B+ $
8/National initiatives falling behind for want of chips
-defense
-space
-computing
-telecom
-medical
-automotive
-power
-electronic gadgets
9/Feeble attempts were made by GoI & some private players
10/Past dispensation lacked vision & foresight

Advantages of India:

-super rich proven engineering talent
-acknowledged scientific capabilities
-high end design skills in chip making
-dependable workforce that would respond to call of nation
-good relations with audience countries for markets
-highly appreciated soft power of India

Disadvantages of India:

-bureaucracy and bad reputation
-redundant electronics/manufacturing policy
-strange taxation practices
-dubious large project handling reputation
-governance standing international scrutiny
-not par infrastructure:
-availability of land
-water
-reliable labor
-power
-support
My take:

-tag it as a national initiative
-capital can be raised as “social IPO”
-GoI offers sovereign guarantee
-identify the best technocrat to head it with sweeping powers
-reverse drain 'the brain' with top class pay packages
-Tier 2 town to accept the infra challenge
-invite International partners with 25 years of taxfree offer
-bypass crappy policies by reporting directly to PM as in ISRO
-The potential of this initiative can take India to a 5T in no time
-create a ripple effect in economy and job sector
-offer to the world the cheapest place to manufacture chips
-bullet train, mangalyaan, GSLV, Aadhar, LCA shows we can do it and should it
-this will spin off moving many manufacturing ideas to India

The gap b/w India, China and US is waiting to be ‘manufactured’
