Thread: Movies and series I’ve watched or rewatched this quarantine season and my own rating out of 10 - from the perspective of a frustrated film student, DOP and cinematography enthusiast

(ayern, gumawa nga)
Guys, sobrang mataas standards ko sa Pinoy movies. I rarely watch Pinoy movies but those that I’ll include here are one of the bests in PH cinema right now. If I could just have my hands on indie films 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Anyone, please give me links huhu.

Okay, here we go
1.) Isa Pa With Feelings (2020)
Rating: 8.2

rewatch
2.) Hello, Love, Goodbye (2019)
Rating: 8.2

rewatch

For a mainstream pinoy romantic movie, this has all the balance, tbh. First time watching Kathryn & Alden in the big screen and I’m impressed.
3.) The Day After Valentines (2018)
Rating: 7.0

Trigger Warning: The indie feel in this is strong. This movie depicts darkness amd rawness masked in good cinematography and scriptwriting. Always been a fan of Bela’s natural acting.
4.) Me Before You (2016)
Rating: 7.8

rewatch
5.) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Rating: 9.4

rewatch but I don’t even remember the story since I’ve watched this maybe 12 years ago haha

This didn’t win Best Original Screenplay for nothing.
6.) Money Heist Season 2 (Part 3 & 4)
Rating: 9.0
7.) When The Camellia Blooms
Rating: 8.5

Defying the stigmas of single parenthood. Story-wise, it was light & realistic with dark twists. Feel good drama.
8.) Crash Landing On You (2020)
Rating: 8.6

I’m in this for the cinematography and set locations but the story and drama style is typical for the K-drama formula. Nothing new. No big twists. Kinda predictable. The actors were great tho. The finale was overstretched.
9.) Unforgettable (2019)
Rating: 7.9

I’m glad we’re making these kinds of movies in the mainstream rather than puro love teams and comedies. This was just a relaxing & heartfelt movie. Sarah did a good job portraying a character with mental disability. Cinematography, also 👌🏻.
10.) The Outsider (2020)
Rating: 8.5

A good horror series. The whole eerie vibe of all the episodes really would make you feel uncomfortable and scared. Favorite characters would be Holly, Jeannie and Yunis. What do you expect more from a Stephen King book?
11.) Prison Break (2005)
Rate: 8.5

Honestly, the first season was the best but what I liked most was each character’s development through out the series. Writers were so witty on this one to be able to stretch this to 4 seasons.
12.) ELITE (2018)
Rating: 8.7

A bulk of my rating goes to the first season. This is the show Riverdale tried to be. Superb acting from the cast and it tackles a lot of social issues. Not so typical from your average highschool drama - unless your hs involves murders.
13.) Dead Kids (2019)
Rating: 5.0

Well, it’s teen-angst-gone-wrong kinda vibe but then again, I’ve watched ELITE so, that makes this movie a p*ssy. Acting wasn’t the strong point but I like how it ended realistic.
14.) BuyBust (2018)
Rating: 7.5

Basically, it’s The Raid: Manila Edition. I like that it’s raw and realistic. However, it could’ve been done better. Some of the action choreo and acting scenes were cringey (since, I’ve been watching a lot of action). Good ending tho.
15.) Messiah (2020)

Rating: 7.5

This series will test your beliefs and principles but I watch with less emotions and more of a critical mind. It’s good and the whole vibe is like a thriller especially at the end of the series. Is He real or a con terrorist?
16.) Community (2009)

rewatch

Loved this sitcom ever since I watched it in college. It’s up there on my comedy shows list together with Friends & The Office. Ugh! I missed these guys! Ken Jeong’s most iconic role too!
17.) Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020

The season’s not yet finished but I like this season. Obviously, I liked the other seasons better like Opening Doors and Boys & Girls in the City more but on general, Terrace House is just a classy& funny reality TV show. Interior design 😍
18.) ABNKKBSNPLAko? (2014)
Rating: 7.6

Bob Ong Classic. Definitely very nostalgic for Gen X (titas and titos of manila 70s to 80s) and Ys (millenials80s to 90s). If you’re born past 1997, you can’t relate 😂
The book is so much better tho. His style of writing is 😍
19.) The Girl in The Orange Dress (2018)
Rating: 7.4

Pretty good storyline. Loved how most of the movie took place in just 1 setting and how they maximized that setting. I hope this was more recognized. Ugh! Fangirl dreams! These posters tho 😍
20.) On Beers, Vodka and Regrets (2020)

Rating: 6.7

It’s actually the first time I’ve watched a pinoy movie that tackles about this particular issue. However, I think it could’ve shown the personal n social effects more.Very anti-romcom but the ending is still feel good.FINALLY
21.) The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind (2019)
Rating: 8.8

Wow! What a promising directing debut from Chiwetel. This is a DOP’s paradise. Story was so touching and inspirational. Cinematography is divine
22.) Imagine You & Me (2016)
Rating: 6.7

Well, for a mainstream love team movie, this is actually good. The plot was not unique but not cliche. I watched this after being impressed by Maine’s IPWF and Alden’s HLG. It’s nice how they’ve improved so much. Cinematography was good.
23.) Tallulah (2016)
Rating: 7.7

Very honest movie about motherhood, marriage and different kinds of dysfunctional family. I wasn’t expecting the ending to be like that but that was the more realistic & natural direction it could’ve taken. Tammy & Ellen hard-carried this movie.
24.) The Platform (2019)
Rating: 7.7

Classic dystopian movie about social classes n heirarchy. Message: “If we just take enough of what we need, there’ll be plenty for the less fortunate.” Good thought in times like these but it could’ve been done with less gore.
25.) Andhadhun (2018)
Rating: 9.3

Really enjoyed this movie. Bollywood moviea are really unique and this one has a very unique and interesting plot. It’ll make your eyes glued to the screen. Very mainstream comedy with dark twists but very well done. Highly recommended!
26.) BIRDSHOT (2016)
Rating: 8.3

It’s a coming-of-age movie but it also tackles more about the reality in society. Parallel with Maguindanao Massacre with hints of the rawness of how small town police works. The cinematography took my breath away. 😍 Red delivered thrill.
It deserves another tweet of it’s masterful cinematography 😍
And anotha one 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 *Spoiler alert
27.) Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975)
Rating: 9.9

Lino Brocka served a world-class masterpiece 45 years ago. Everything from the plot, script, acting, cinematography, editing was outstanding. Imagine living this time n actually watching this movie in the cinema 😍
Mainstream movies these days don’t even come close to 1/8th of this masterpiece. Imagine, they had very limited resources back then & in the middle of Martial Law.Cinematography for a movie like this in the 70s was already above par. There were no drones, no big cranes just wit
28.) Mia (2020)
Rating: 7.8

For a romcom movie, this is pretty good. This is like the romcom version of On Beers, Vodka & Regrets. Overall, I liked it. Good cinematography, good story but what I really likes was the montage at the beginning and the last 10 mins & the editing 😍
Was gonna give this a solid 8 but SPOILER ALERT, there was no actual resolution to her drinking problem unlike OBVAR. I shouldn’t but I can’t help but compare cuz they tackle the same issue. What I loved was how this was also a “climate change awareness movie”. I learned so much!
29.) Memories of the Alhambra (2018)
Rating: 8.9

Very unique storyline. I like how the story unfolded with the flashbacks & forwarding. I liked it more than CLOY. Hyun Bin hard-carried this drama but PSH was also an important supporting charac as much as the villain.Good ending
30.) Lady Bird (2017)
Rating: 8.7

For a coming-of-age movie set in 2002, this was kinda nostalgic for me. The color grading they chose adds depth to the cinematography. Definitely sumthn everybody can relate to at one point. Fave charac was the mom but that Danny & LB moment ❤️
Wanted to point out how realistic the mom-daughter relationship was. I mean, everybody knows a mom like that or atleast has. Also another fave charac relationship was the bff. Tbh, if I was LB, I’d settle for Danny but how great it is to have an ex to be a GBF? Cinematography tho
31.) Extraction (2020)
Rating: 7.0

As far as the plot goes, it’s pretty cliche for a drug war movie but for action geeks like me, it’s 🖤Choreography, stunts, body count is good. Seing the BTS on how they shot those scenes made me appreciate it more.Last 5mins cinematography👌🏻
32.) El Silencio del Pantano (2019)
Rating: 4.5

Well, I wouldn’t watch it if it weren’t for Pedro Alonso. The storyline could’ve been much better. I liked how his character is somewhat writer- psycho-killer but the execution of the plot was actually boring.
33.) Write About Love (2019)
Rating: 8.2

Love the storyline. Pretty unique cuz I haven’t watched any movie with this kind of plot. Really impressed with the actors - very natural. Loved the montage shots paralleling with the princess story narration. I cried. Ending was bitin!
34.) I’m Drunk, I Love You (2017)
Rating: 7.9

Well, typical bestfriend love story but not really cliche. I love the ending of this movie in technical and reality-check aspects. Very relatable and nostalgic for me as it brings back hs & college memories. Great acting&chemistry!
35.) Pihu (2017)
Rating: 7.0

A solid 7 for a thriller/drama starring a 2-yr old. It’s so obvious that the kid wasn’t acting at all so, it all lies to the director to trick us and manipulate the surroundings, score, shot angles to give us a good thrill.
36.) Adan (2019)
Rating: 8.0

A not-so-typical coming of age movie that explores sexuality but it definitely took a sharp turn on the twist at the end. Rather than getting sexually aroused, I was so fucking scared at one point I needed to pause & breathe.Great suspense-thriller!
37.) Indak (2019)
Rating: 8.5

Probably the MOST UNDERRATED FILIPINO FILM. It takes a different approach to produce a musical film production (trust me, I know). I appreciate how much work, effort, talent these guys put into this movie. The director & cinematographer 👏🏻
Had a lot of favorite acts in this film. The opening sequence was great, the solo dancers montage Vin’s solo, the parallel montage during the build up b4 climax, the actual dance, the ending. This was just a cinematography heaven for me 😍 Nadine and Sam and the dancers 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
38.) Insiang (1976)
Rating: 9.5

Another intense plot from the Master, Lino Brocka. Revenge plot story that tackles a lot of social issues that is still relevant today.
39.) Time To Hunt (2020)
Rating: 6.3

Slow build up but great tension and suspense to satisfy the viewers but it was actually anticlimactic. Storyline was a lil bit cliche on the amateur young-adult heist-gone-wrong and lacks on scrupulous script-writing n ending but good acting.
40.) 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten (2016)
Rating: 7.5

A coming-of-age film with a subtle take on homosexuality. Not as intense as I expected it to be but the subtlety went well with the storyline n script. Very good acting. Cinematography was on point n those academy ratio shots 🖤
41.) Bar Boys (2017)
Rating: 8.5

Great story of friendship, family, relationships n life. Storyline, script, acting was superb (syempre bias kay Caloy). But this really something every student should watch at some point. So many life lessons to be learned n lived by
42.) Just the 3 of Us (2016)
Rating: 7.2

Basic mainstream pinoy romcom that follows the CGM formula. Good plot & script. Good acting - JLC’s forte. Just a light, funny, heartfelt and feel-good movie. JLC can literally be paired with anyone n still work with immense chemistry.
43.) John Denver Trending (2019)
Rating: 9.5

Easily one of the best Pinoy movies of this generation. It tackles more social issues aside from cyberbullimg and what really hurts is it’s true and it is happening. This movie is so realistic it should be a documentary. (1)
Cinematography was great. Acting was exceptional. Score, script, color/grading, tone and mood of the movie were all great but the depth of the story and how the social, political, judicial, issues in our society are being exposed and tackled as the story unfolds was amazing. (2)
44.) Bliss (2017)
Rating: 8.1

Probably the first ever Filipino psycho-thriller that I paid attention to and actually reviewed. It was all in the amazing writing, directing, cinematography, score & acting. Editing was great! This has the potential to battle out int’l indie films
45.) Bagman Season 1 (2019)
Rating: 8.0

Intense & fast-paced plot. Loved the storyline despite some minor continuity n detailing flaws. Good editing & cnmtgrphy. Over-all, it was a great series that tackles real-world issues n would get u hooked bec they maximize every episode
46.) Dangerous Lies (2020)
Rating: 4.7

Plot was pretty underwhelming and predictable. Acting didn’t really help. It feels like I’ve watched this movie before but it was done better before.
47.) Glorious (2018)
Rating: 5.7

Writing was alright. Very cliche for an age-gap based romance movie. The editing gave me a headache tho. There were a lot of rough transitions & even continuity flaws. Angel & Baguio hard-carried this movie but props to Tony’s effort too.
48.) Bagman New Season (2019)
Rating: 9.0

Very unpredictable! Intense plot and action. Love the conflicts! Siyempre dalang dala ni Caloy and Arjo but kuddos to the very talented supporting cast. From directing to writing, cinematography, detailing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 This is def a must watch
49.) Mañanita (2019)
Rating: 4.5

This could’ve been a short film<40mins. Charac intro dragged on too much. I appreciate how they wanted to tell the story abt th peaceful police but they could’ve done it better w/ a more interesting plot. Cnmtgrphy is good tho.
50.) The Tapes (2020)
Rating: 9.1

I just can’t believe we can make these kinds of production. I felt “The Outsider x low key Stranger Things” vibes from this. Writing, cnmtgrphy, set, effects, score, editing were all great! So many questions yet to be answered so there’s def S2
51.) Past, Present, Perfect (2019)
Rating: 7.8

Everything is great from the writing to the directing, script. Shots and acting were good. I just loved the poems and the theme. It just captures you and makes you invested and relate to it. Loved how it ended.
52.) Neomanila (2018)
Rating: 8.0

Powerful & direct message. Socially conscious films like these follow the footsteps of the Master Lino Brocka. Very powerful cinematography esp the use of lighting & angle shots. Editing & color-grading👌🏻 Good thriller as it is Red’s forte.
53.) The Half Of It (2020)
Rating: 7.0

Finally! After 16 yrs, we get Alice Wu’s comeback feature. It wasn’t a cliche teen love story. I loved how it tackled race, queer & belongingness issues. It wasn’t very in depth & serious. It was just light & easy on the 👀. Good ending.
54. Ampalaya Chronicles (2020)
Rating: 6.8

Good story and script. I loved the poems. Khalil hard-carried this through his acting kahit mejo cringey yung fake Batangueno accent but it’s not that important. The story just felt a lil bit rushed for a 1hr 20min movie.
55.) James, Pat & Dave (2020)
Rating: 7.0

Teen love story with good plot and comedy. I’ll give extra points for Loisa Andaloi’s acting. It’s the first time I’ve watched her in Past, Present, Perfect, which I totally loved, and I can say she’s very underrated. Natural actress.
56.) Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Hit Musical (2018)
Rating: 9.8

It’s so different rating movies and musical. Ang daming additional aspects to consider when it comes to musicals but my rating would be the same. Maybe I’m just a biased E-heads fan but this musical is a MUST-WATCH!
57.) Watchlist (2019)
Rating: 8.2

I’ve seen a lot of buybust & war on drugs movies by now and this, by far, has the best story. Its realness & straight to the point storyline was compelling and powerful. I liked it better than Neomanila tbh. Ms. Alessandra de Rossi’s acting 😍
58.) Pamilya Ordinaryo (2016)
Rating: 7.5

The rawness of this movie was so compelling. The CCTV shots were smart. Although there isn’t much attention on cinematography, the 2 lead actors hard-carried this whole movie. Story wise, it was unique & mirrors real life on the streets
59.) Guerrero (2017)
Rating: 9.0

Story was unique and very captivating. Right balance of comedy & drama. That little boy has so much potential when it comes to acting. Cinematography, score, editing, directing were all great! Not surprised why it won so many int’l awards👏🏻👏🏻
60.) Guerrero Dos: Tuloy Ang Laban (2019)

Rating: 9.2

This is the story behind the “missing pieces” in the original movie from the perspective of Miguel. Everything about the cinematography to the theme & message of the movie was fluid. Superb acting from the cast esp Miguel
61.) Senior Year (2010)
Rating: 7.5

What a nostalgic movie for me. This is one of the most realistic highschool-teen-coming-of-age movies I’ve watched kasi ganito talaga kami noon and real-life clips were included. Watching it 10yrs later like in the story, super relatable!
62. Never Have I Ever (2020)
Rating: 7.0

Typical coming-of-age teen series but it’s my first time to be actually exposed to the Indian culture in depth. Loved the comedy. The cast did a great job it’s just that the story was cliche and predictable but still a feel-good series.
63.) The Last Dance (2020)
Rating: 9.4

A very in-depth look on Michael Jordan’s basketball career. I love the fact that his personal life and family were not included that much and it just focuses on his greatness on the court. Also, loved the fact how they debunked the media.
64.) Love Lockdown (2020)
Rating: 6.0

I appreciate the effort for them to film while in ECQ. I like the triptyc-interwoven stories. Theme is very dark & has a lot of TW inc suicide & SA. Low budget & limited resources so not so much effort aa cnmtogrphy & effects but good actors
65.) Last Fool Show (2019)
Rating: 6.2

Rom-Com about an indie director going mainstream and having to pull out her story from her past relationship. I like the plot but what I loved more was on how they pointed out how indie films are so different from mainstream films.
66.) The Write Moment (2017)
Rating: 7.4

Definitely loved the plot of this movie! A writer that needs to follow the “script of his life” to move on or else he’ll be stuck on loop forever. Great story! I wonder why mainstream don’t pick up these kinds of fictional stories?
67.) Northern Lights (2017)
Rating: 5.8

If it weren’t for their setting in Alaska, this movie would be a complete cliche of all other local romance teleseryes. This could’ve been actually better if they set aside the lovestory & focused more on the father-son reltionshp story.
68.) Ang Larawan (2017)
Rating: 8.3

Totally enjoyed this musical film! I loved the plot, the setting, the production, the music by Ryan Cayabyab and of course the surprise star-studded cast! You should all watch and support local musicals and films like these 😍
69.) Dekada ‘70
Rating: 8.0

A timeless & socially relevant film in the midst of Martial Law. It focuses more on the different perspectives of each family member and contradicting views on social and political aspects. Very eye-opening to the viewers. The actors did a great job!
70.) Oro, Plata, Mata (1982)
Rating: 9.5

Watching this again after more than 10yrs felt completely different. Things made so much more sense now with all the political, social issues. I mean, it’s a different timezone, yes, but we still have so much to learn from this film.
First of all, the cinematography of this film is just 😍 2nd, the writing of this screenplay referencing the 3 parts to the title Oro (Gold) - Plata (Silver) - Mata (Death), was absolutely genius. Directing, acting even the effects were good at this time.Every scene was important
For those who are wondering, the title 𝙊𝙧𝙤, 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙖 is an old Filipino architecture superstition/ritual that staircases shouldn’t end by a multiple of 3. Builders would chant “𝙊𝙧𝙤, 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙖, 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙖” and it should never end in Mata (Death) bec it’s bad luck.
There were 3 parts in the film - about how two upper class families living in their mansions (Oro/Gold) needed to runaway and hide in the jungle (Plata/Silver) to escape the war from Japanese invaders and find themselves in a matter of life and death situation (Mata/Death)
71.) Throwback Today (2017)
Rating: 7.8

Def not the first time ive watched talking-to-ur-future/past kind of movies but I loved how unique this storyline was. Loved all aspects esp the set production for some reason. Great actors! & that Lav Diaz feature Slow cinema movement🤎
72.) Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank (2011)
Rating: 7.5

Love movies w/ a director/writer as th main protagonist as it shows viewers BTS & perspectives of a creator. This movie satirically targets perplexities of a director-dilemmas vs the actor, vs co-directors, vs the craft itself.
73.) Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 2 #ForeverIsNotEnough (2016)
Rating: 6.0

Sequels can either be a disastrous or good and I can say this was still a good second take. Still funny and satirical. Eugene is good but Kean’s acting was overlooked.
74.) Shift (2013)
Rating: 6.8

A girl falling in love with her gay bff. The writing was pretty well-thought and loves how effective the actress in portraying that pain from an unrequitted love (spoiler alert!) I really can relate to Yeng’s “Jane of all trades but master of none”
75.) Sakaling Maging Tayo (2019)
Rating: 6.6

Even though the characters are in college, this felt like a highschool teen romance. Very light and giddy. It didn’t need to be more in depth or more mature. I had a different scene for the ending in mind but it was still good.
76.) Nakalimutan Ko Nang Kalimutan Ka (2018)
Rating: 7.8

Writing was good. Loved this plot although it reminded me a lil bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but it had a totally different story and twist to it. Very anti-romcom romcom hugot feels. Loved the soundtrack.
77.) Through Night And Day (2018)
Rating: 8.0

Love the writing & the script in this movie. Very realistic and the actors are both so underrated. I know how good @msderossi but #PaoloContis on doing drama and actually killing it?!
Iceland as setting? Ice na cinematography 😍
78.) Belle Douleur (Beautiful Pain)
Rating: 8.0

Beautiful take on the age-gap themed lovestory. I like how this story didn’t really make the 20yr-age gap relationship as taboo as it usually is in most movies. The title made much more sense at the end & the ending lived up to it
79.) On The Job (2013)
Rating: 7.8

Very good take on the neo-noir genre for mainstream ph cinema. It didn’t cry indie except for the handheld camerawork that def helped express the thrill & suspense. Cinematography & acting really made up for its lack of scrupulous story.
80.) Alagwa (2012)
Rate: 8.8

Outstanding writing&acting.Contrast bet father&son’s charac n relatnshp were a very exceptional take on single parenthood.Focused on emotional acting w/c th actors superbly delivered. Editing n angles were effective in expressing movie’s dark theme
81.) RED (2014)
Rating: 8.4

A story about storytelling stories. It gave a role to the audience-to make us think abt truth from fiction. It’s so easy to get lost in the stories. I liked how the romance clashed with the thrill & crime. Great editing rhythm & the score was good.
82.) Citizen Jake (2018)
Rating: 7.4

There were a lot of controversies and buzz around this film when it first came out and, after all, it was Mike De Leon’s comeback film after 18yrs.
Contrary to my expectation, this film was not about making a (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sr8ooo
83.) Bakwit Boys (2018)
Rating: 7.7

A heartwarming story of brotherhood. For the dreams of the unknown & unheard. Actors were great but there were some details that made me think they’re purposefully making them look overly poor when it’s not really needed. Cnmtgrphy was good.
84.) Kuya Wes (2018)
Rating: 7.0

A lighthearted story that has Forrest Gump vibes written all over it. With the series of ups & downs the charac experiences, it made him realize the importance of how to love - selfless but not compromising self-love. Good actors and soundtrack
85.) Us Again (2020)
Rating: 5.5

I appreciate the writing but I guess it kind of lacked in the execution and detailing. I didn’t like how they downplayed the issue of cheating and it felt like a little too shallow for the storyline. I guess I was (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sr8p5m
86.) Finding You (2019)
Rating: 7.1

Definitely loved how the story unfolded. I appreciate the writing and the in-depth plot. At first, I was actually expecting a more mediocre plot reveal but I was actually surprised by how it turned out. Although (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sr8p61
87.) Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 3 The Real Untold Story of Josephind Bracken
Rating: 8.0

I prefer this type of raw comedy like no-acting acting compared to the mainstream ones. Loved the mockumentary format and considering everyone was characterizing(cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sr8p7g
88.) Ranger G (2020)
Rating: 6.7

I’ve seen past docus about the Scout Rangers & I felt like this one didn’t include everything. I’ve seen way tougher trainings from them b4 but good job to Matteo for completing it. Salute to all the soldiers who are serving this country!
89.) Hollywood
Rating: 7.0

Love the set design, cinematography, & the overall production but as much as I’m a fan of Murphy, I thought that it was far too predictable and cliche as they tackle familiar issues and storylines. I love the actors perfs and theatrical acting style.
90. The Kingmaker (2019)
Rating: 9.5

What an outstanding depiction of the Marcos fam and regime. It is very ironically disturbing and almost enters the dark comedy genre whenever Imelda would make a statement in one scene and it would be debunked (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1src3ch
91. Project Power (2020)
Rating: 7.5

The cinematography and the action choreo definitely made up for it’s cliche storyline but I love the originality in the wrting. however, the superpowers they used are already overused. Props to the action choreographer and cinematographer
92. Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Rating: 8.5

Always been a fan of Spike Lee’s ability to use editing and great storytelling skills to make a 2hr30min movie flow so smoothly. Def eye-opening and very inspirational. Very underrated actors too esp Lindo & Boseman. Rest in Power
93. Metamorphosis (2019)
Rating: 4.0

The concept of a family + exorcism +priest protagonist isn’t new to the horror movie scene. It felt like something I’ve watched many times before. It wasn’t really experimental in the sense of storytelling, directing and cnmatogrphy wise.
94. ANNA (2019)
Rating: 5.0

The story concept, writing and editing style used was actually good but it fell flat on the directing. I needed more action sequences and not just the repetitive pulling the trigger style but overall, it was an okay movie.
95. Mulan (2020)
Rating: 7.0

Lot of pressure to take on a classic story. Efforts were great. Loved the over-all production. Although it fell short on the comedic n musical side, it’s a completely different take n I already expected that when Caro said it’s gonna different POV.
96. #Alive (2020)
Rating: 5.5

What’s good about this is it depicts the mental state of being alone at the worst situations w/c is relatable but it felt short on the story dev’t w/c made it predictable. Was expecting it to be on a national scale. Great actors n production tho
97. 21 Bridges (2019)
Rating: 6.0

Was expecting more from a Russo brothers production. For a cop/crime thriller, it lacked action and suspense. Boseman was too good for this story and film. Something about the script, editing and scoring makes me cringe. It was too predictable
98. Enola Holmes (2020)
Rating: 7.9

The strong msg and theme of gender equa was effectively delivered. Good story-telling w/ interactive technique by the writer and I love that it’s not overshadowing the personality of the charac. It did fell flat on the unneeded romantic plot.
99. The Crown (Season 1-3)
Rating Ave: 9.4

Def one of the most complex n high level shows I’ve watched. Directing, writing, acting, cinematgraphy, editing n the whole prod r just top tier 🙌🏻 Love the directors’ creativity considering this is almost closest to a biopic. Cast 👌🏻
100. Hello Stranger (2020)
Rating: 8.4

Wasn’t really expecting much but it exceeded all my expctations! Directing, acting, editing n cinematogrphy was superb considering this was shot in unconventially. It’s so good! It’s been so long since I invested so much feelings in a show
101. Nurse Ratched (2020)
Rating: 8.5

Loved the production although it quite toned down the psycho-thriller-suspense mood of the original Nurse Ratched of OFOCN, the writing complemented these scenes well - very well contrasted as portrayed also in the cinematography. Love it!
102. Waiting For Sunset | Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon (2018)
Rating: 8.9

Right off the bat, it gave me a slow burn-indie style with the establishing shots. Great cinematography and acting from vets. Imperfect but real relationships. Very raw and the end scene was 😍
103. Criminal: UK S1 (2019)
Rating: 9.2

This show definitely set the bar for criminal interrogation scenes! Very intense! Those silent moments are just 🤯 Brilliantly written and directed with top class actors! Ep 1 was my fave but there are only 3 eps! I need more!
104. Criminal: UK S2 (2020)
Rating: 9.9

&I thought I can’t love this show more! It’s so easy for you to get captured in the moment and get invested. You feel like you’re in the room. Actors are crazy good n the direc n writer r crazy geniuses. It f*cks up ur mind in a good way
105. American Murder (2020)
Rating: 7.2

This was disturbing and chilling to watch. Real footages were used. The first time I encountered this story was on youtube but this docu pulled apart all bits of details down to the last crumb to be presented to us. Loved the pace & edit
106. Boys In The Band (2020)
Rating: 8.7

Strong on all aspects! The opening sequence was amazing! Something that we don’t get from the orig play. Amazing pace and editing styles. Overly theatrical but it’s Ryan Murphy of course! Need to see this on stage 😭
Plus, Jim Parsons and Zach Quinto are on a whole new level on this! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
107. Ang Kwento Nating Dalawa (2015)
Rating: 6.0

Starts slow and quiet almost like a slow-burn but there wasn’t anything particular to burn in the end. Everything was just too painfully real as it gets. Loved the long pauses and one takes to establish the emotions. Acting 👌🏻
108. Tayo Sa Huling Buwan Ng Taon (2019)
Rating: 7.5

Compared to the prequel, this one was the actual slow-burn, high tension kind of style. I am speechless with the cinematography 😍 That long one-take shot in the middle was 🤩 Definitely, came thru w/ the acting n directing!
109. Gameboys (2020)
Rating: 8.7

At first, I have to admit, it was too cringey for me and too unrealistic with the cheesy pick-up lines and all. Plus, the lack of actual cinematography (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srea61
110. F#*@bois (2019)
Rating: 6.5

When I watched this last year, I didn’t expect it to blow up. It blew up bec of the full nudity scenes which actually were just accessories to the main story. This is not a gay or BL movie. (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srea6g
111. Tandem (2015)
Rating: 7.9

I would give this a solid 8 but I felt hanging in the air for a more intense burn and action scene. But the cinematography in this was insanely good! The actors’ chemistry JMxNico divine! They didn’t hold back on tackling the issues.
112. The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Rating: 8.9

It may not be as scary as Hill House but the production and writing is equally good. The production actually was much more complex and expensive compared to Hill House. This whole storyline (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srea9q
113. Babae At Baril (2019)
Rating: 9.5

First of all, WOW. It’s not everyday that I get to watch films like this - international or local. Before I get to the technicals, I just want to commend the whole cast and prod. (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srecs8
114. In Between Series (2020)
Rating: 8.5

So, I realized that I should have made a separate thread for the BL series bec I definitely have a different set of criteria that I’ve been following specifically for BLs but anyway, I’m still giving a..(cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srersc
115. Kung Paano Siya Nawala (2018)
Rating: 7.5

I love the whole melancholic anti-romcom mood in this film. It sets the exact tone to establish these very profound characters. Both characters are very flawed in their own ways and the whole story.. (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srersm
116. Mariquina (2014)
Rating: 8.8

Heavy on sensitivity and melancholy, this film depicts a very realistic father-daughter story. I loved how the story unfolded through the nonlinear storyline supported by flashbacks and back n forth, past and... (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1srertn
This is the first time I’ve seen Barbie Forteza in a movie and I’m very impressed. Very commendable acting from the whole cast - Mylene Dizon, Ricky Davao, Che Ramos, of course, the vets! 👌🏻
117. Smaller and Smaller Circles (2017)
Rating: 7.0

Disclaimer: I haven’t read the novel. (And I guess I should have)

What I liked about this film was that it pictured the reality perfectly. From the establishing shots around Manila, Payatas, to (cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sreru7
118. Violator (2014)
Rating: 9.4

Easily, one of the most memorable indie films that I’ve watched. As much as I want to talk about the brilliantly done cinematography and the very strategically and stylish techniques the director and the dop created.(cont) http://tl.gd/n_1sres2o
119. Kinatay (2009)
Rating: 8.6

This film was one hell of a ride, figuratively and literally, for the audience and the protagonist in the story. I interpret this whole theme as a huge irony to the protagonist’s life as a rookie police student. The same.. http://tl.gd/n_1srf9q5
120. Ma Rosa (2016)
Rating: 9.2

I would give this a 10 if I base my rating on solely how it made me feel. It didn’t feel like a movie to me. It felt more like a documentary of a real family. The camera work was so cinematically dynamic that it takes you.. http://tl.gd/n_1srf9qv
