You know what I am realizing in this mess? The PIs, who I haven't interacted with previously on scientific nitty gritty (study design, etc.) in my center are SMART. My fav meetings have been bottom>up "think tanks" w/ them. I love it so much, ya'll. I am so lucky to have SCIENCE!
/n: We are back in “think tank” mode and my happiness is increasing, hence me waking up early in panic-joy recently. I’m so blessed to have been able to experience every corner of science this past year in order to note the things I love vs. hate.
/n: I talk a lot about the timeline of the vaccine, but the experience I’ve personally had has been unparalleled to anything I likely will ever experience scientifically again. So for your info, here’s a thread...
/n: I’m having to use the following to soul search around my next career step so this is as much of “make sure you pay attn to what you love & hate” advice for me as it is for you.
/n: INDEPENDENCE - LOVED being given extra bandwidth to move and shake how I want. My boss is deputy director and often just too busy to check box everything so I, being me, often would just tell the project manager to pull the trigger, and I’ll explain later

/n: NO BENCH WORK - LOVED designing, analyzing, overseeing the experiments, writing them up in fda data packets or manuscripts... but the actual doing it... nah, I’ve been pipetting since I was 16. Retired now with 19 years of service.
Imagine this mic being a pipette.

/n: WORKING GROUPS - LOVED that this became a VRC-wide effort (in some ways, the other ways are for my book lol) that allowed me to interact broadly and allowed for influx of broad perspectives ... and PIs calling at 5am to talk is fun af lol. #teamwork
/n: SCI-COMM - LOVED connecting with the general public through socials & events. I’d purposely avoided science on the internet previously... scientists be corny (me too I know) so I just preferred connecting with friends. I’d mistook sci-comm as a boring scientist playdate.
/n: MENTEES - LOVE AND WILL ALWAYS LOVE training young burgeoning naive minds. It kicked up a notch this year, ‘cause I wasn’t in lab with them so it was a glimpse at PI-dom I needed (and enjoyed).
/n: COLLABORATING - LOVE. Still... https://twitter.com/KizzyPhD/status/1349689729822834696?s=20
/n: TELEVISION/RADIO - LIKE enough that I’d consider more later, but I don’t LOVE it enough to do it allllll time.
/n: PRESENTATIONS - LOVE, but virtually they aren’t as excited. Give me back the podium that I likely won’t even stand behind because I’m too animated to be still.

/n: CLINICAL STUFF ... nah, I’m good. https://twitter.com/KizzyPhD/status/1232974402419073025?s=20
/n: WEEKENDS - I always worked a little on weekends, but previously it was a choice. Now, it’s mandatory or else the vaccine response slows. As you can probably tell, “mandatory” doesn’t bode well with my free spirit.
/n: EMAILS - https://twitter.com/KizzyPhD/status/1247273764821381122?s=20
/n:
I’m certainly going to have to think more on things I dislike or I’ll never be able to soul-search deeply enough to choose...
