It’s been a few weeks since my last weekly EPL blog, a lot has happened since. Everyone who knows me knows I love football! Here’s a little thread on why I’ve been blogging since before blogs existed & why kept going despite the invention & evolution of the new media/internet. ⚽️
1995 I woke up in intensive care with a brain infection, having lost my memory, not even remembering my aunt’s name! My dad told me, the first question I asked the nurses was if Liverpool won & wrestling was on TV.
Ever since then, I always wanted to remember how the Reds were doing, who was playing, so, I started writing down the results, the teams, my match notes, the tables, etc.
The first manager I remember is Roy Evans. The first boss I saw live was Gérard Houllier in a Cologne friendly & at Elland Road (2003/04). My first home match attendance was under Rafa Benítez, I remember that last-min Valentines Day winner by Luis García against Arsenal in 2006.
Football was always my escape, throughout my childhood, teenage crises & adulthood, all problems & challenges, I always watched, wrote & reported to keep myself distracted & going. Through all the highs & lows with the Reds. I get goosebumps every time that song starts. YNWA
I ended up studying media & then journalism, trying turn my hobby/addiction into my job = watching, writing & reporting on football/sports in general (I do love cricket as well, enjoy rugby & tennis, too; I’m a general sports nut, daddy’s girl).
Thanks to the credit crunch & crises though, I ended up in an office job I hated instead. But I was lucky, jumped into a completely different industry, found a job I love, flying high in the sky.
All the writing was a good distraction, but also to make sure, if I would ever lose my memory again, I’ve got it all on record. Yes, meanwhile the internet & media had been born, evolved & taken everything over, everything is just a click away, but still,
I kept writing, my take, my experience, my notes, my life. More personal.
I’ve been predicting the results of all Premier League fixtures against my dad since 2000-2001 (FA Carling Premiership then; S for me = Sonja, O for my dad).
Having lost most of the seasons (drawn one, taking the total score to 16-4 to my dad), I swore I’ll keep on scribbling & blogging until either I beat my dad or Liverpool finally win the league again.
So, that’s why I kept going. And going. And going. This season looked to be my last, the Reds finally on top. But now everything’s uncertain, if & how it will end. Will I keep going? I have to. Because. I love it. Need it.
Plus, if the internet breaks down, I’ll still have all the Reds facts & stats I need right here. Write on.
Some may call it pointless, I’m just a keyboard warrior, why bother, there’s so much & many of them out there. Who cares?! I do. Looking back at my notes, makes my heart feel warm, my smile glow & me appreciate what I’ve been through but still kept going.
And we’ll get through this as well. Walk on.
Whilst I’m at it, here are some trips down my memory lane, see pics: the 2001 UEFA Cup (as it was know as back then) glory & THAT unforgettable night in Istanbul, 25th May 2005, THE comeback win & European trophy number 5. (I wrote in Deunglisch = mix of Deutsch & English)*
*(my heritage, German mum, English dad, dual nationality, but England through & through when it comes to sports!)
Last but not least, if you’re not sick & tired of me yet, here’s my latest blog, hopefully not the last:
