Where Do Ideas Come From? The Concept of the Muse (THREAD)

You might think that you 'have' great ideas. But where do these ideas come from?

If you have ever been in a mad frenzy of creative output, words flying out of your fingers...

then you have felt the spirit of the Muse
You-as-ego, the conscious version of you who is reading these words, may feel that you have voluntary control over yourself.

You may feel that you are in control of what you think, where you put your attention, what you intend, what you’ll do, and so on.
Consciously, You think you are doing the act of 'thinking'.

But what is really happening?

You are tuning your mind to a certain energetic frequency, and writing down (hopefully) what ideas come to you.

They arrive, gifted on a plate, popping into your waking mind. Hello!
“My brain is only a receiver, in the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists.”

- Nikola Tesla
Whatever this connection is, the more you practice it, the more it develops.

This unconscious creative genius that hums beneath the surface of your mind, constantly processing and analysing

It is very real even if you aren't aware of it or call it something else.
It has been labelled 'the Muse' through history.

Muse can be a genius, a daimon.

An independent force in your psyche that directs your creativity, and to which you deliberately hand over ultimate responsibility for your work.
"Hesiod Listening to the Inspirations of the Muse"
- Edmond Aman-Jean
The ancient Greeks believed the Muses were the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts

They believed Muses were deities that gave artists, philosophers and individuals the necessary inspiration for creation

They personified this connection to the 'ether'
"Beethoven Listening To A Muse”

by Ludovic Alleaume
When you are:

showing up and doing the work
writing consistently
being professional/reverent to the muse,

=the more consistent your ideas and quality of your writing.

I firmly believe that the more you respect this energetic connection, the better your creativity.
Your muse is responsible for providing the ideas and energy, the fundamental fire of the work.

You are responsible for:
1) waiting when your muse says wait,
2) acting when your muse delivers the inspiration,
3) making yourself a fit conduit by doing whatever kind of practice work is necessary

This 3rd pt can be broken down into treating your body well, nourishing it nutritionally, through exercise + movement, mindfulness + breathing techniques. You must be healthy and clear minded
This coupled with regular scheduled creative 'sit-downs' help to make the most of your muse.

The Western view of people 'Being' Geniuses
rather than 'Having' Geniuses act through them

- Leads to long-term creative stress and burnout.
You can deliberately personify your unconscious self, whether as a matter of pure attitude or a more concrete 'being' with a specific appearance or name.

This makes it more accessible and easier to offload your creative problems to it; then to accept the inspiration and insight-
-that come back to you when they occur.

It enables you to offload creative responsibility to this 'other' within you, and helps to reduce the stress that can arise from judging 'your' work too harshly.
I notice it within my own writing - when I sit down to put fingers to keys, the energy and ideas flow through me.

I don't know what word is coming next, where the end of the sentence is going

One thing I DO know + FEEL is a connection to 'source' through creative expression.
