smashers irk me, and they didnt used to. sometime, between the transition from PM to smash4, the playerbase became younger, louder and, vocally, ignorant. we collectively reduced compiling data and testing and theorizing with each other in region cuz competition.
I loved that part of brawl. talk shit about its comp play (and I agree, brawl not a great game to enter money into), but that community, that timeline, i learned the most about myself, improving, and the ppl around me. we shared common goals, and even if we didnt we enjoyed it.
we theorized, we tested our limits, we played for hours at dentis house, sometimes overnight. aerolink timed me out multiple times (which was not fun) but the difference then compared to now is that I was willing to do what I needed to improve, and the byproduct was winning.
we all complained about camping. we all complained about top tiers. but everytime we came back and discussed patience, adaption. we watched replays together, we labbed TOGETHER. we spent time outside of tournament TOGETHER. and that bred a shared understanding of the game.
even if we didnt like the game, we loved it. and I guess that's what gets me so heated interacting with players after that era. the understanding is gone. from week 1, everyone claims to know everything. about their character, their play, others characters, others play. baffling
and then these same players will go to their scene and post in their groups. their misconceptions, misunderstandings, complaints and general lack of motivation to improve. and these players inhabit the larger body of the comp scene. and these things would be fine, but no one fix?
it's just a bunch of 4heads sharing uninformed opinions. and that sucks, cuz they dont even want the info! I'm 4head #1, but I'll inquire for info, I'll play until i figure it out. during that process tho, the scene at large will flame you for not knowing or placing, regardless-
of your skill or your personal process. and you gotta hold it.
and not all of this is INHERENTLY wrong. it's missing balance, understanding. it almost seems as if those aren't priorities anymore.
