The book contains a wishlist.

Jin starts to follow the things in the diary to impress her. They walk while sharing earphones and volunteer at an animal shelter, spent time at cafes just like the girl writes in her diary.
It also contains this! Smeraldo flowers!
With great difficulty he finds a person to deliver those flowers on Aug 30th, the day he chooses to confess his love to the girl.

The truck and hence the smeraldo flowers are actually indirectly responsible for her death.

The man's story and Jin's story are quite similar.

But he knows he is deceiving her by not showing his true self to her.

Maybe Jin could have prevented the accident from happening if he had chosen to accept and express his real self to the girl first.
But Jin didn't truly love himself. He tried to change himself in order to make the girl accept him.

He goes back to August 30 to save the girl.
(The clothes representing the several times he went back in past to save someone)
and returns the diary to the girl in next loop eventually prevents the accident from happening and saving the girl's life!
