the numbers on the bottom of a cheque is called a MICR string, which contains the branch, the institution, and the account number assigned to your account; god help you from financial fraud if you post it with the name/address information on the top of the cheque shown https://twitter.com/BoozyBadger/status/1233436606406823937
cheques are hands-down the least secure means of transferring money to another person; they're an IOU written from one bank to another that takes five days to clear (hence the hold period, if it's held) that literally have all your account details written right on the front
during the last two weeks I've had one victim of cheque fraud and one near-victim of it; people promising a job send them a cheque for a couple grand - they say that the recipient can keep like $500 and send the rest back to buy equipment or something or other
the fraudster encourages the recipient to deposit the cheque via their phone or an ATM and to transfer the money to them; that cheque will inevitably bounce, leaving the recipient holding the bag for a bounced cheque and an owed balance of a thousand and something dollars
this is a common fraud scheme both in canada and the US and I'm very relieved when people actually query me on whether depositing a cheque matching that story is a good idea
