Slight delay in announcing our next #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek, but we had to do a spot of swimming...across to the #IsleOfMan ! The Hydro Hotel at Ramsey, later the Grand Island Hotel,was a magnificent building. We say "was" as it closed in 2009 and was then demolished... #coast

The #hotel was originally Beachmount, a house built 1880 for Capt Aaron Williams. After he died it was acquired in 1895 by Ramsey Hydropathic Establishment Ltd who converted it into #IsleOfMan's 1st Hydropathic hotel-opened 1897 [image c1900 imuseum] #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek

In 1901 #Ramsey #Hydro #Hotel was managed by Amy Midgley & asst manager Charlotte Elliot, from Liverpool & Manchester. Amy was a boarding house keeper, Maughold Street before moving to the hotel [Image https://www.imuseum] #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #IsleOfMan #seaside

#Ramsey #Hydro provided an attractive retreat with its own grounds & fabulous location. Relaxing pursuits included golf, billiards, tennis, boating, croquet (see pic) & was esp renowned for its brine baths, said to be the first on #IsleOfMan. #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #coast #seaside

By 1911 the #Ramsey #Hydro housekeeper was Louisa Armstrong, a former dressmaker originally from Leicester. It wasn't unusual for hotel staff to be non-local; the manageress was a Londoner, & the coachman was the only livein local #IsleOfMan #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #coast #seaside

MOMENTOUS changes in 1963 as #Ramsey #Hydro #Hotel was "torn to pieces & reconstructed." So said George Eglin who reported on new holiday resort plans for the #IsleOfMan...also included Billy Butlin's helicopter tour of the island, but that's another story! #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek

T'newly renovated #Ramsey #Hydro reopened summer 1963 as Grand Island #Hotel offering 1st class accomm. You'll be glad to hear twas 'tastefully decorated'! In the 1970s the Grand Island #Hotel was offering rooms with a private bath and luxurious bars. Anyone have a time machine? #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #Ramsey #IsleOfMan

By the #1980s the hotel was managed by David and Wendy Busby and was a fully fledged family friendly hotel offering packages and palm fringed lawns. Shower supplement £1. Sign of the times... #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #Ramsey #IsleOfMan #seaside #coast

Exciting times at Grand Island Hotel later in the #1980s when Trevor & Adrienne Davis were owners: Colour Magic Weekends! No we weren't sure either, but for £225 you got return flight fr Liverpool, accomm, meals, colour analysis, facial & hairdo. #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek #IsleOfMan

...colour analysis was 'seasons philosophy' apparently. The colours that suit you depending on whether you are a summer, winter, etc person..Fancy that!

But back to #SeasideHotelOfTheWeek. Sadly 1990s & 2000s were Grand Island #Hotel's final years. Despite several reprieves it closed forever Feb 2009 & its contents auctioned off.
