Every boy you see was born with innate vitality. That's why when the girls are playing with Barbie dolls, the boys are pushing & shoving each other. This primal exuberance needs an outlet; contrary to which they become deviant. A few years ago in Arusha...
...a group of men from the General Tyres Company in Njiro pooled resources & started a youth team. They called the team "Executive 11". Rather than stationing the team in the opulent suburbs of Njiro, these few wise men took it to the doorstep of the underprivileged in Ngaramtoni
The team met on Sundays and the schedule was simple. The wise men would play with the young boys from 11:00 am after church, eat snacks together at the end of the session (1:00 pm). Listen & advise them for 30 minutes. Call it a day. I was one of the young boys in the team.
These wise men understood that boys needed people they can relate to. That to change.improve the underprivileged boys' perspectives on life, they would need to provide an outlet for the pent up emotions & innate vitality which inevitably informs the male being: Hence the team.
And boy did we look forward to those Sundays. Not so much for the snacks but to opportunity to bond and get closer to successful men we could finally relate to. They were speaking our language. It was very shocking to learn that success could actually speak our language.
"Executive 11" would go on to participate and win the 2007 under-17 soccer category in the East African Games. Gents, there are no bad boys. No boy is born evil. If their vitality does not meet impact, it will be misplaced. That's how they end up rapists & robbers.
Not because they are inherently bad, but because they are inevitably ebullient. If they cannot find a positive outlet, they will seek a deviant one. And for me, sports is the ultimate outlet. There are values that can only be forged in brotherhood: sports provide that opportunity
Sports teach boys on brotherhood: loyalty, discipline & determination. It molds them into productive men. To persevere. They get knocked down & they get back up. But today, you go to Kayole, & there are no soccer/rugby fields. You go to Kitui, they've locked the stadium on boys
Without an outlet, the boys will continue to mug you. Without the knowledge o how to master male vitality, they will continue to rape your sisters. You might imprison corrupted vitality in 1000s, but more will still rise. Unless you become socially active & change perspectives.
Frederick Douglass said, It's easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. Unless this is realized, more boys will seek out corrupt men. Because this lot is easily accessible & boys learn better in brotherhood. Boys need productive men more than ever.
This is what happens when male vitality fails to meet impact because of social/political corruption. No libraries. No parks. No Soccer pitch. They get bored. So they seek release in alcohol, violence & reckless sex. Do your part.
