Research is underway by @SOA_ie with the support of @HousingAgencyIE @IrlLDA @GI_Irland with the aim to make recommendations for legislative change & other supports needed to facilitate 21st century community-led approach to co-operative housing in Ireland.
Ireland has an existing co-operative housing sector with new organsations like @CualannO and established federations like @coophousingie which could support a new generation of housing co-operatives if the right legislative basis, and appropriate financial supports are in place.
. @creditunionie members could be investing up to 12.5% of their reserves in the shares of viable housing co-ops, avoiding complex arrangements (SPVs, investment vehicles etc) that currently need to be devised for financial co-ops to invest in existing social/affordable models.
Co-operative housing has the potential to be a transformative part of the housing mix in Ireland (alongside other tenures) if supported correctly - offering an attractive option between private ownership and forever-renting that is mainstream across the rest of the EU.
