Professor #KyprosNicolaides was born in Cyprus in 1953, the son of a Greek-Cypriot doctor who used to travel around the villages on a donkey to care for his patients, often taking Kypros with him.
When he was 17, Kypros moved to London to study Medicine at King’s College.

During his fourth year as a medical student, he had to choose a 3-month elective.
While most of the medical students preferred exotic destinations like Seychelles or Hawaii for their electives, Kypros, notorious for his fear of flying, chose to stay back in London.

There, he met Prof Stuart Campbell, a pioneer of ultrasound who introduced him to the early ultrasound machines.

In 1984, with Dr. Rodeck, he was the first to develop fetoscopy to transfuse fetuses affected by Rhesus isoimmunization

#Nicolaides was the first to develop the single operator method for cordocentesis and intrauterine transfusion.

In 1992, he begins to study the association of nuchal translucency thickness with trisomy 21 shaping the way obstetric care is provided in the #firsttrimester all over the world. Between 1992-1998 he examined more than 100K women to screen for T21.

More recently, together with @ArgyroSyngelaki, @cylpoon1, @AJOGEd_RR &others, he studied the use of vaginal progesterone to prevent preterm birth, how we screen for preeclampsia & use of aspirin for its prevention, changing once more the way we provide care for our patients

For his work, he received the Ian Donald Gold Medal from @isuog
He has published over 1,500 scientific articles and has collaborated on more than 30 books. Through #FetalMedicineFoundation he has trained hundreds of #fetalmedicine specialists from all over the world.
