🔎 A CLOSER LOOK AT MYSTEROUS IMAGERY ON THE GOVAN STONES 🔍

As you can see from this side by side comparison of the Jordanhill and Dupplin crosses, the early medieval carved stones found in Govan appear to have been heavily influenced by Pictish sculpture! #picts #strathclyde
🐎 On the Jordanhill Cross located at Govan we see a 'warrior on horseback' motif, which appears often in Pictish carving. We encounter this motif again on the Dupplin Cross thought to depict Caustantin, son of Fergus, a king of the Picts.

Look closely at the Jordanhill and Dupplin warriors and you'll notice they both have enlarged heads, seemingly a stylistic choice to emphasise the status and importance of these early medieval riders! 🗿 #pictish #archaeology
Amongst the carved stone collection preserved today inside Govan Old Church, the Jordanhill Cross is arguably one of the most expertly carved and impressive - perhaps originally having been carved as a monument for one of the great kings of medieval Strathclyde! 👑⚔️ #govan
