February 1, 2003 - 17 years ago this day - Kalpana Chawla, and six other fellow astronauts died, when their space shuttle broke up during re-entry into the earth's atmosphere.

Born in Karnal in India, in 1962, she completed her B.S. in Aeronautical Engg from Punjab Engineering College, M.S. in Aerospace Engg from the UT Arlington, and her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado – Boulder.

After completing her doctorate, Dr. Chawla began working at @NASAAmes. But Dr. Chawla wanted more: she wanted to be an astronaut.

She was selected for the 1995 astronaut class (after being rejected once earlier). She completed her first space flight aboard Columbia in 1997.
