Give me dumb cities and dumb homes: one reason for growing housing inequalities is modern wasteful, over-engineered, over equipped, fragile "smart" homes. Dumb homes are so much cheaper to build and maintain than "smart" homes requiring expensive technology for basic functions.
Your dumb home doesn't have a function that automatically regulates ventilation. But instead of spending 5-10% on the building cost on an electronic "smart" system that breaks down every few years and requires electricity to work, you open a window when it feels stuffy.
Your dumb home is easily hooked up to your dumb city by the amazing application of a door (invented maybe sometime 12 000 years ago). Once outside your dumb city is full of doors, accessible on foot, and behind them is everything you need: friends, dentists, shoe makers, etc.
Since the first cities at the dawn of human civilization, the privately owned home has been the surest way to wealth and status. By forcing people to build nothing but expensive smart homes that can only function with a car we are denying them the chance to accumulate wealth...
...and putting down roots that will eventually turn into a home that will one day grow into a place, a village, a city. If you want more equality in a society, the first thing you do is that you give people a chance to settle down. Even if that home is small and unassuming.
