So you want clout, prominence, and recognition in a fandom? No problem. But you should know that comes with an expectation of community-building. You gotta be open to meeting, talking, and befriending the folks who give you that power. Leadership is about service. /1
This is something I've been thinking about and which a good pal just recently articulated for me. The idea that you can ask for power (explicitly or through positioning and politicking) and then say "I've got what I came for, leave me alone" is bad faith, man. /2
I think that's what gets frustrating about this fandom, and what gets under my skin particularly as someone with a "justice" lens. I'm not jealous of someone's fandom power, it simply feels /unjust/ to see them wield it and not also act with a spirit of community stewardship /3
For the record, MANY people in this fandom are excellent at being leaders. MANY MANY. That's what keeps that vibe of inclusivity going, and I'm super thankful for those folks. Anyways, just my position on something that's been bugging me for more than a year. /end
