Book lovers, a debut author asked me to explain last night why pre-orders are so important and it struck me that authors *gently encourage folks to do this but maybe it's not always clear why so here is a little thread on why they matter so much so here is a little thread..
1. It seems pre-orders show the author's publisher that there is interest in the book and this can encourage the publisher to invest more in promoting it to help it find more readers!
2. It shows booksellers out there that there is interest in the book and this may encourage them to order in more stock in advance of publication day. Popping into your local bookstore and asking them to order an author's book in is one of the most supportive things you can do!
3. If you are in contention to hit the bestseller list, the pre-orders can make it happen as all pre-orders count towards the first week of sales rather than being spread across a few weeks.
4. The dark arts of the internet mean that shopping algorithms pick up on the traffic and this often means an author's book will get promoted online by online retailers.
5. Authors will often share a link to the big A. website for ease BUT you also pre-order from ALL bookshops & it is so amazing to support your local bookshop. Online, @hivestores in the UK means you can pre-order from an indie and @KennysBookshop in Irl. ships for free worldwide.
6. One final thing to mention is you usually don't have to pay now for any pre-orders. If you order online you will pay when shipped with A. and in bookshops when you collect so if you're planning to buy the book at some point anyway getting the pre-order in is amazing!
7. Authors have a special place in their heart for folks who pre-order and appreciate it so much so thank you from all of us to all of you!!
Finally, this is on my mind as I've squeamishly asked friends and loved ones to consider pre-ordering my second novel due in May - if you'd like to read about it, you can do so, here but if you do decide to pre-order please consider a REAL BOOKSHOP if you can! Thank you so much!!
@thereadreaderapp unroll please
P.S. I almost forgot - it is also wonderful to ask your library to order in a book for you - Long Live The Libraries!!
