They were threatened.
They were attacked.
They persevered.

In 1916, he enlisted in the 106th Battalion, Nova Scotia Rifles. He was 58.

At Vimy Ridge, he forced the surrender of an enemy machine gun position.

Recommended for a medal of valour.
He died in 1950.
His family received the medal in 2010.

They were rejected by recruiters during World War I.
They fought to fight for a country that thought they were less than equal.

They prevailed.

They were called Canada's best kept military secret.

A mentor in Korea. A fearless leader.

At home, he fought injustice for his people.

He carried Brokenhead Ojibway Nation with him everywhere.

Sergeant Tommy Prince is Us.🇨🇦
She blazed a trail for women in flight.
She flew 47 different planes and 600 hours during WWII.

"She would rather fly than eat, drink or be married."

First Officer Violet Milstead is Us.🇨🇦
After emigrating from Japan, he enlisted and fought at Vimy Ridge. He earned the Military Medal at Hill 70.

He helped Japanese-Canadian veterans earn the vote.
He was imprisoned and treated as an enemy during WWII.

He stood tall for his people.

Sergeant Masumi Mitsui is Us.🇨🇦
They were of colour.
They were from elsewhere.
They were here before anyone arrived.
They weren’t men.

Through the years, all of them kept pushing.
Prejudice. Discrimination. Intolerance.

They stood up, stood tall.
Luckily, they remain.

They are Us. 🇨🇦
