This is going to be a longer thread, because Cho Seungyoun's voice is his playground and it took me a bit longer to figure out his technique. He's a very unique vocalist.

💛 Cho Seungyoun's Head Voice 💛

Head voice is a style in which, through a different arrangement of muscles and breathing, the sound resonates through the head. It's used for higher keys.

Seungyoun's head voice technique is probably one of the most stable I've ever seen. He does it so naturally that you would think it's his speaking voice or normal voice.

It's actually a bit of a hard task to pinpoint exactly where he's entirely using his head voice. As I'll explain later, he often uses something called passaggio which can pass as head voice sometimes.

Due to the vibe of the song, he strains his facial muscles slightly, probably to create this effect almost as if he was screaming. And yes, that was intentional.

His head voice has a loud, clear and resonating sound. His technique perfectly makes the sound resonate through his mouth and outward, which is something hard to do due to the neck strain to make the note possible.

In this cover as well, when it's time for the highnote he slightly doubles over, so that he can more properly squeeze his abdomen muscles and force the air out in an strong manner.

Basically, Seungyoun has an overwhelming control of his head voice, even using style techniques and altering his head voice as much as he wants to to match the song.

💛Cho Seungyoun's Chest Voice💛

Chest voice is the register in which the sound resonates through the chest. It's mostly the voice we use to speak since it covers middle and low keys.

Well, even though it's our speaking voice, Younie barely uses it to speak. I actually had a hard time also finding a clip in which he used only his chest voice to sing or speak.

This probably comes from his while speaking Chinese and Portuguese. Chinese is a tonal language, which means it's necessary to have some kind of melody while speaking.

Even though Brazilian Portuguese isn't exactly tonal, it's very common for us to speak with some kind of melody and volume changes. That's probably an habit he took to the Korean language as well.

It's very usual for him to change registers even while speaking. So finding his exact chest voice was a task. Something I noticed is, his chest voice has a slightly darker color compared to his other registers.

This is probably one of the reasons why he doesn't often use chest voice while singing, so the song flows more naturally without interruptions due to the change of voice register.

The lower rap part is probably what his chest voice sounds like, a darker color and lower range.

Even though he doesn't use it often, the perfect style techniques are easily seen on his rap parts, as he uses vibrattos and husky parts to create a vibe for the song.

Passaggio voice is something that I didn't cover here yet, as well as it's a barely used technique. It's also called mixed voice.

The main reason why it's not used is: it's hard.

Passaggio voice is a register right between head and chest voice. In it, you thin your vocal cords in chest voice so that there's not a break between head and chest voice.

It's a perfect blend between head and chest voice, maintaining a bit of the softness and natural feeling of the chest voice, and the strength and high pitch of the head voice.

Most singers use it for very short parts, as it's hard to maintain and a bit risky, easily you can make mistakes. Seungyoun, though, abuses of his passaggio abilities.

As said before, his chest voice has a different color to his head voice, so he uses passaggio almost as if it was his chest voice. So as there's not a break in voice color, he uses the passaggio so it looks like one thing.

Falsetto voice is a style in which, rather than using the vocal cords as a whole, you use only the edges to create a high pitched, opera like sound.

Seungyoun uses falsetto voice more often than other X1 vocalists. Since passaggio can also work between chest voice and falsetto voice, it's not hard for him to use it and create a good flow.
