some notes on the misconception that in order to be a conscious fashion consumer you need to not buy any fast fashion (FF):
- that^ idea is classist
- luxury (expensive) doesnt equal ethical
- buying a lot of ethical clothing is more damaging than buying a reasonable amount of FF
basically: being sustainable is more about your habits regarding clothing not just WHAT (type) clothing you’re buying; aka, how often shop, how do you care for your garments, what process (online/in store)
on the fashion footprint calculator i posted earlier, i scored 91% lower than the average consumer & my wardrobe is almost exclusively cheap/fast fashion
anyways what im saying is you dont need $$$ to rethink your relationship with clothing- some good reading on this is earnest elmo calkins work on “consumptionism”
to summarise that article, basically he says there are 2 kinds of products—
(1) the things you use - e.g. cars, washing machines, things you buy and use for a long time
(2) the things you use up - e.g. chewing gum, food, cigarettes
consumptionism - a driving force behind neo-capitalism - is all about getting people (us) to treat the things we use LIKE the things we use up. aka, capitalism has (successfully) convinced (most of) us to treat clothes like something we use Up, rather than as something we use
in conclusion discourse around being more conscious in our fashion choices need not be classist so dont make it So
