1/ As professor & psychologist, I read a lot of evidence-based books & publications to guide my thinking & practice.

But I also study the opposite: "street psychology" from pimps, gangs, prisons, etc. since randomized controlled trials (RCT) are not the only source of truth.👇
2/ One interesting philosophy that comes from pimping subculture is that 'squares' don't see the world as they do, in a black-and-white way:

"You're either pimping, or being pimped."

At first, this seems extreme & cynical, but there's some validity to this hardened perspective:
3/ In a capitalist society, there are the owners (in startup-landia, the founders & investors who have the lion's share/preferred shares) & the employees.

It's not necessarily negative to be 'pimped', as long as you're happy with the tradeoff of learning or earning in exchange.
4/ It takes a special type of steeliness (perhaps even cold-bloodedness) to be an elite founder/investor (read Iceberg Slim's "Pimp").

Most people don't have 'it' or even want to be boss/pimp. They're content with their paycheck for minimal responsibility & going home early.
5/ But what's interesting is that pimping transcends people as well. From this interview with police, you can either be pimped by a person, or by an addiction.

Even if you're "independent", if you're addicted to drugs and working to maintain that lifestyle, you're being pimped.
6/ Thus, the biggest con of our generation is not that people are being pimped by their employers, that's a conscious/willing choice with reasonable benefits.

It's that corporations that you DON'T work for are pimping you by taking your time, energy, & even work with little pay.
7/ Attention-driven companies use behaviorism to create addictive, gamified, apps to PIMP YOUR FOCUS, since you voluntarily sell yourself for free:

Twitter gets free takes
Instagram gets free pics
Yelp gets free reviews

If you're not monetizing or learning, you're being pimped.
8/ A lot of people are on Twitter to "build their brand" without measuring efficacy & ROI.

My 3M views/month is lead gen. that converts to an extra six-figures in private practice income plus a few direct VC investment opportunities.

I can quantify & justify this, can you?
9/ In essence my pimping model is patronage: a few 'whales' generously subsidize my time, which allows me to give valuable content away to hundreds of thousands of people for free.

So I willingly participate in 'the game' because it is ROI positive for me & has public benefit.
10/ Even so, I'm acutely aware of the Pareto Principle of 20% of my content producing 80% of results.

So I'm practicing more #dopaminefasting 2.0 to limit frequency, & focusing on such thread-based content to engage conscious/intellect & videos to engage the unconcious/emotion.
11/ I'm also restarting my newsletter for 2020, and trying to put out a thoughtful long-form blogpost or video at least once a month to more directly engage with my audience.

PIMP OR BE PIMPED.

Either way, do it consciously & strategically in 2020.

12/ “We are the absolute bosses of that whole theatre & show in our minds.

Don't project what will worry you or dull that vital edge.

Always write positive, dynamic scripts & show only the best movies for you on that screen whether you're pimp or priest”
