what I read in 2020:

but first of all to keep me on track this year, https://twitter.com/aaaaaaaaalin/status/1211299544371060737?s=19
...and what I read in 2019: https://twitter.com/aaaaaaaaalin/status/1081544642720456705?s=19
1. Much Ado About Nothing (William Shakespeare)
4.25🌟
I'm still annoyed at how claudio didn't even say sorry for easily believing the slander against hero and @ how everyone forgave him so quickly??

beatrice + benedick's banters carried the show imo ✊
2. Baptism of Fire (Andrzej Sapkowski)
2🌟
this book is so dry you only need to rub your finger to its surface and it'll immediately catch on fire.

the irony in the ending though, that's the best part out of the whole book. and cahir. he's great too.
3. The Tower of the Swallow (Andrzej Sapkowski)
4.5🌟
apparently there are lots of swallows in america 😌

anyway, the story is so engaging that I felt a sort of whiplash just from trying to internally compare the previous book to this. might be my most fav book in the series.
4. Lady of the Lake (Andrzej Sapkowski)
2.5🌟
cahir mawr dyffryn aep ceallach is my favourite character and sapkowski did him dirty. as with angoulême. and milva. and regis.

rest assured I'll be forever salty about this.
5. Season of Storms (Andrzej Sapkowski)
3🌟
didn't really add anything crucial to the actual plotline but if you love the witcher's world, you'd enjoy this book.

one thing I do like is the fact that geralt is fINALLY shown to be using different signs other than the aard sign 😌
6. House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski)
2.75🌟
I'll be honest. this book kinda goes over my head. I kinda get what the gist is about, but I still couldn't relate to the general hype. and it's not scary at all. so ¯\\_ (ツ)_/¯
7. Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen)
3.5🌟
I actually like the story, despite this book taking me nearly half a year to finish lol (I struggled a bit with the language ngl) but I'm already looking forward to rereading this sometime in the future :)
8. The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald)
4.25🌟
my heart aches for gatsby, who successfully chased after the american dream only to fail in achieving his one ultimate dream. s/o also pointed out that his life is not that much different than fitzgerald and yeah, tru :(
9. All the Crooked Saints (Maggie Stiefvater)
4.25🌟
the first book from the fabulism genre that I like and doesn't leave me totally confused.

still one of my lesser-liked genres though, sorry ¯\\_ (ツ)_/¯
10. The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
5🌟
I love this. I teared up right at the ending because just like that, the reality of what's about to happen all of a sudden hits me.

this definitely is going into my list of favourites ✨💛
🌻 january wrap-up! 🌻
total book read: 10

genres read: fantasy (4), classics (2), modern classics (2), horror (1), fabulism (1)

fav of the month: The Little Prince
meh of the month: House of Leaves
11. The Huntress (Kate Quinn)
4.75🌟
I love the usage of the mythological rusalki & how the author connects these beings to both the selkies & the lorelei.

I also love finding out about the existence of the legendary Night Witches/die Nachthexen.

a solid read, for sure 👍🏽
12. The Queen of Nothing (Holly Black)
4🌟
now this trilogy is what I meant when I said I want some zing between my OTPs 🔥🔥

anyways, the trilogy has been fun, very fast-paced + easy to read. and I agree 💯 with what they're calling these two: a true-born slytherin couple ftw!!
13. The Last House Guest (Megan Miranda)
2.5🌟
god, this bored me to tears. never have I ever felt so glad to finish a book. it felt like an end to a long suffering, light at the end of an endless tunnel, you name it.

also, what is up with rich wipipol & not having curtains???
14. Three Dark Crowns (Kendare Blake)
3.75🌟
I'm not sure if I'm just in the mood for fantasy or whatever but I reaaally enjoyed this book. I like how it's also quite dark.
15. One Dark Throne (Kendare Blake)
2.75🌟
why are a lot of the things that occurred in this book so convenient? why are the reveals so anticlimactic? and why am I still enjoying this? who knows 🤷🏾‍♀️
16. The Young Queens (Kendare Blake)
2🌟
nothing really interesting happened. this novella is a more fleshed-out version of the three queens' background stories, which has mostly been alluded to the readers from the main storyline.
17. The Lightning Thief (Rick Riordan)
[reread #3]
4🌟
I enjoyed this slightly lesser than usual, mostly because I spent the majority part of the book annoyed with the narrator for making luke sound like a dumb jock 🙄
18. The Oracle Queen (Kendare Blake)
5🌟
holy sheep this is really good. did NOT expect it to be that good, but it is.

p/s: joseph could never hope to receive the kind of feelings I felt towards rosamund near the end of this frfr 😩✊🏾
19. Little Women (Louisa May Alcott)
4.75🌟
I have no other words that fits this book better than – wholesome.

it reminded me a lot of the works done by enid blyton, actually (should be the other way around I know but I discovered blyton before alcott so ¯\\_ (ツ)_/¯ )
20. The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins)
4.75🌟
[reread #2]
so glad this stood the test of time and is still just as good as the first time I read the series. I'm also recommending the audiobook. the narrator is just phenomenal 😩🙇🏾‍♀️🙌🏾
21. Two Dark Reigns (Kendare Blake)
2.75🌟
idk what to say except that the ending is kinda boring
22. Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan (Gong Ji-young & Sahara Mizu)
4.75🌟
well this was short and depressing but with a slightly hopeful ending. there were some really good, self-reflect kinda quotes in here as well
23. Uzumaki (Junji Ito)
4🌟
finally getting to the conclusion after more than a decade feels good, ngl.
🔥 february wrap-up! 🔥
total read: 13

genres read: fantasy (7), manga (2), historical fiction (1), thriller (1), classics (1), dystopian (1)

🥰: The Hunger Games
🤬: The Last House Guest
24. Tomie (Junji Ito)
3.25🌟
fun but it got a bit repetitive. I'm guessing this is his first published manga? it's cool seeing how his drawing improved drastically between the volumes.
25. Warau Kanoko-sama  (Tsujita Ririko)
3🌟
read this after I started Koi Dano Ai Dano so it's interesting to see how kanoko's personality remain unchanged even during her middle school period. her friendship with momo-chan's really sweet too 😩

the format's a bit repetitive tho
26. Gyo (Junji Ito)
3.25🌟
sweet childhood memories 💝☺️
27. Koi da no Ai da no (Tsujita Ririko)
4🌟
“people struggle to find an answer even in things like math where there is clearly only one answer. so there's no shame in struggling through something that has no right answer (life).”
28. Five Dark Fates (Kendare Blake)
2.25🌟
there's this quote inside the book:
“Don’t ask questions. It’s where we were meant to be.”

is the author trying to tell the readers to not question any superbly convenient coincidences that kept happening, as long as the story goes on?
29. Angel Densetsu (Norihiro Yagi)
3🌟
um not much to say. just glad that I can cross this off from my to-be-read-manga list.
30. Sakamichi no Apollon (Yuki Kodama)
4🌟
a great coming-of-age manga. friendship + jazz = ✨
31. Cat Street (Yoko Kamio)
3🌟
not bad but not that great either. may have a greater impact on me if I read this during my primary/high school period who knows
👾 march wrap-up! 👾
total read: 8

genres read: manga (7), fantasy (1)

🥰: none lol
🤬: Five Dark Fates
32. Machida-kun no Sekai (Andou Yuki)
4.25🌟
it's a wholesome manga. love the drawings as well!
33. Good Wives (Louisa May Alcott)
4.25🌟
enjoyed this a bit lesser than little women but it's most probably because they're all grown up now and I miss the innocent fun they used to have with one another :(
🥀 april wrap-up! 🥀
total read: who knows lol I lost my will to keep track of my readings somewhere in the middle of the month

genres read: manga (tons), classics (1)

🥰: Shuukatsu!! - Kimi ni Naitei
🤬: none I think..?
34. Little Men (Louisa May Alcott)
3.25🌟
maybe I'm not 100% in the mood for it because it does feel a bit draggy. I still enjoyed it though
35. Jo's Boys (Louisa May Alcott)
3🌟
*sighs* I'll miss these people. I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed w/ Dan's ending. then again life never goes as you want it to.

and now it's time to “let the music stop, the lights die out, & the curtain fall for ever on the March family.”
36. Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (Cho Nam-ju, Jamie Chang)
4.25🌟
the combination between fiction and statistical facts scattered throughout it is a bit jarring.

but the ending. wow. I was thinking it would be a cool place to end the book. then I turned to the next page, & it is. wow.
37. Stay Sweet (Siobhan Vivian)
3.25🌟
is it perfect? no. am I confused about amelia's parents' sudden, unexplained and unresolved 180° change towards their beloved daughter near the end of the book? very. am I satisfied with all the ice cream and summertime vibes? definitely.
38. Convenience Store Woman (Sayaka Murata, Ginny Tapley Takemori)
4.5🌟
the woman just wants to be a convenience store worker for god's sake let her be people
With the Fire on High (Elizabeth Acevedo)
3🌟
this is one of those that I can confidently rate as a solid three stars. I did not get really attached to any of the characters but I still like reading about her journey.
40. Scythe (Neal Shusterman)
3.5🌟
it's fun to read. the plot twists are not mind-blowing and the romance is a bit underdeveloped but I still like the story.
41. Thunderhead (Neal Shusterman)
2.5🌟
I feel let down by how juvenile this feels. but then I felt guilty because it's YA and maybe, juuuuust maybe I'm judging it a bit too harshly.

then I thought of the hunger games' trilogy. and I don't feel guilty anymore.
🌃 may wrap-up! 🌃

genres read: contemporary (4), classics (2), sci-fi (2)
