In 1951, Tompkins main role at Douglas Aircraft was to design multiple space craft along with kilometer-long antigravity ships for the U.S. Navy.

He later worked for other classified projects at TRW, General Dynamics among other aerospace companies.
It took Tompkins designs and research nearly a decade to make a fully operational space craft that was launched in the 1980's known as "Solar Warden". Below are some depictions of his designs.
