A thread regarding grades, as I submit a large batch of them to a university registrar:

A grade represents a hopefully-mostly-objective abstraction of how much you learned about 1 subject in 1 class at 1 point in time, as I & others tried our best to teach the material. 1/5
At its best, a grade is related to how hard you worked in this course. It doesn't speak directly to how smart or talented you are, your fitness for this degree, or how well you will learn other topics at other times from other professors. 2/5
A grade says nothing at all about your value as a person. 3/5
And most emphatically, I want to add that a grade should not ever be construed to measure your potential to add value to our shared field out in the world. I have given great professional references to students who've gotten excellent, mediocre, and poor grades in a course. 4/5
There is much work to be done by our profession to make our cities more sustainable, just, beautiful, and efficient, and I look forward to having you all out here adding your stuff to the fight.

Have a great winter break, and a well-deserved rest. See you back at it soon. 5/5
