All of his gimmicks would have been exposed if he came back for another season.
Some may call him dirty, but Wolf Stansson was a ruthless tactician and a much better coach than Bombay.
Now, you might be saying "Steven, maybe he wasn't an X's and O's guy, but he knew how to manage a locker room."

WRONG.
So in the first movie, the turn around comes when Hans figures out how to get Adam Banks on the team. In the second move, it comes when this inner-city youth gets the Ducks to play like a team.

Bombay is just along for the ride.
